“What Paramahansa Yogananda brought to the West is perhaps one of the greatest gifts to humankind – India’s ancient science of Yoga, the science of knowing the Self, of realizing and experiencing who we truly are, divine souls with unlimited potential.” – Brother Chidananda, SRF President

In commemoration of the centennial of Paramahansa Yogananda’s arrival in the West and his founding of Self-Realization Fellowship, SRF is hosting its first fully online World Convocation—offered free of charge to all seekers—from August 9-15. This global gathering is an opportunity for spiritual renewal and is intended to provide strength, solace, and spiritual guidance to people around the world through the power of group meditations, united prayer, kirtans (sacred chanting), and talks on the “How-to-Live” teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda. Widely regarded as the father of Yoga in the West, Yogananda introduced millions of Westerners to India’s timeless science of the soul through his spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi, and his many other writings.
The 2020 Online Self-Realization Fellowship World Convocation features:
- Daily livestreamed meditations and kirtans (devotional chanting), including a live kirtan from SRF’s sister organization, Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS) in Ranchi, India;
- Livestreamed classes presented by monks and nuns of Self-Realization Fellowship that bring Yogananda’s timeless wisdom into modern focus;
- Informal satsangas (answers to commonly asked questions about the spiritual path);
- Virtual tours of SRF locations in Southern California where Yogananda lived and worked, including the SRF Lake Shrine/Mahatma Gandhi World Peace Memorial in Pacific Palisades, SRF International Headquarters atop Mount Washington, and the SRF Hermitage and Ashram Center in Encinitas.
The classes are on such topics as: how to cultivate the understanding of the individual as not the body, but the soul, and what that means in terms of attaining one’s highest potential and seeing that potential in all others; an exploration of Yogananda’s maiden speech in America about the universality of meditation; how to navigate the challenges of life through yoga and meditation; and how the awareness of divine love in everyday life can bring an unshakable inner assurance that can transform one’s life and the lives of others.
The 2020 Online SRF World Convocation will be livestreamed mostly from the international headquarters of SRF in Los Angeles, where Yogananda lived and worked from 1925 until his passing in 1952.
The program also includes several pre-recorded classes that feature guided meditations along with a review of the meditation techniques taught in the SRF Lessons, Yogananda’s home study series on meditation and spiritual living. Those interested in the technique classes may apply for the SRF Lessons in advance in order to attend them.
