The Bible gives us guidance in directing us to act as stewards of the environment, but it is ultimately up to us to take action and make the change we want to see in the world.

On September 18, members of The Light of the World (La Luz Del Mundo) congregations in Long Beach, Inglewood, Bellflower, South Central and Huntington Park came together, joining more than 2,735 volunteers along with environmental conservation organization Heal the Bay to help clean Alamito Beach in Long Beach, CA.

“Out of respect to God’s Creation, it is our duty to care for the world around us in any way we can,” said The Light of the World spokesperson Jack Freeman. “The Bible gives us guidance in directing us to act as stewards of the environment, but it is ultimately up to us to take action and make the change we want to see in the world.”

As a part of Heal the Bay’s 32nd Annual Coastal Cleanup Day, volunteers gathered at thirty-five beach, river, and inland sites across the Los Angeles County, California. From nine in the morning until noon, the volunteers covered more than 50 miles of land and underwater areas and removed more than 5,000 pounds of trash and 156 pounds of recyclables, including items like a baby jumper car, bike wheels, and barbie doll parts, in addition to the more typical findings.

“All of our actions impact the environment, so I want my actions to leave a positive impact,” said Ricardo Ortega, a Light of the World member who participated in the coastal cleanup event. “As good Christians and citizens, we have to do our part to reduce, reuse, and recycle to protect the gift God gave us.”

The Light of the World has historically fostered a strong sense of community through its charitable initiatives both locally and worldwide. Congregations have demonstrated their commitment to the religion’s most core values through humanitarian aid efforts including pop-up Covid-19 vaccination clinics, food collections, environmental cleanup initiatives, and more.
