Dr. Odzer has recently voiced his on-going concern over sugary drinks as outlined by the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Heart Association recently calling for additional taxes and advertising to kids to be reviewed immediately. The statement called for excise taxes and limits on marketing to children, among other measures; cite strong evidence of association between added sugars and increased risk of heart disease and other long-term health problems.
Stephen Odzer reiterated that the majority of sugar kids consume comes from what they drink and not what they eat. A study conducted shows that kids that consumed 10% over the daily avg of sugar intake showed abnormal cholesterol levels, including higher “bad” LDL cholesterol, higher triglycerides, and lower heart-protective HDL cholesterol. Dr. Stephen Odzer agrees with this assessment and agrees more has to be done.
