According to policy research, minorities in the U.S. have less access to mental health services and often receive a poorer quality of mental health care. In an increasingly diverse world, there is belief that there must be stronger considerations of how to serve those from diverse communities in equitable ways to overcome barriers to treatment that exists for individuals in marginalized groups.

In a workshop to be presented at the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (iaedp™) 2020 Symposium, presenters will demonstrate how eating disorder treatment programs, advocates and clinicians can work together to ensure all individuals with eating disorders can access safe and intersectional treatment options needed for recovery.

Marcella Raimondo, PhD, MPH, SJ Thompson, BS, QMHA, CBTP, CPWS and Lauren Muhlheim, PsyD, CEDS-S, FAED will address the challenges diverse groups face when seeking treatment in eating disorders during the workshop, “Close –up in Social Justice: Developing Partnerships for Treatment Access for Marginalized Populations,” which will be presented during 2020 iaedp™ Symposium slated for March 26-29 at the Omni at ChampionsGate in Orlando. Dr. Raimondo is a licensed Psychologist for Kaiser Permanente’s adult eating disorder clinic in Oakland and part of a regional leadership team. She runs her own practice in Oakland. She is also on the Board for EDRS, advisory board for ASDAH, Board of Founders for About-Face and conference committee for BEDA. Marcella herself recovered from anorexia nervosa over 15 years ago. Her recovery and her martial arts training inspires her dedication to multicultural body nurturance and community celebration.

Thompson is a thought leader in the Health at Every Size®, Body Trust®, eating disorder treatment and recovery, body image and LGBTQIA+ communities. Currently, she is a group therapist at Monte Nido & Affiliates’ The Eating Disorder Center of Portland. Thompson also is the author of the popular blog, Resilient Fat Goddex, and has been quoted in the New York Times, Blood + Milk, and SELF.

Dr. Muhlheim is a psychologist, fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED), certified eating disorder specialist (CEDS) and approved supervisor for the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (iaedp™). She directs Eating Disorder Therapy LA in Los Angeles, is certified in Family-Based Treatment (FBT) for adolescent eating disorders and is the author of When Your Teen Has an Eating Disorder, published in 2018. She has presented internationally on eating disorders and is an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University.
