“Although we may be on different teams on the field, we are all on the same team to mitigate COVID-19. The only way we defeat this virus is together,” said Michael Luecke.

Texas college football is returning for the 2020-2021 season amid the coronavirus pandemic with some schools allowing fans in the stadium with limited capacity and tight restrictions while other schools opted out of having fans this year.

College Health Alliance of Texas (CHAT) representatives Austin Hickle, Student Body Vice President at Southern Methodist University and Michael Luecke, Student Body President at University of North Texas are encouraging students to celebrate responsibly as the two teams face-off this weekend at the Apogee Stadium.

“Although we may be on different teams on the field, we are all on the same team to mitigate COVID-19. The only way we defeat this virus is together,” said Michael Luecke.

Founded in response to the coronavirus in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19, CHAT seeks to promote the importance of public health guidelines and to actively engage students to do their part in preventing further spread of the virus.

“In order for us to protect our future, we must all do our part. Students are allowed to have fun, we just need to do so in a safe and cautious manner,” says Austin Hickle.

The statewide coalition encourages all students to support their respective teams by following best COVID-19 practices from the CDC (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) such as wearing masks, maintaining six-feet social distance protocols and through frequent handwashing or use of sanitizers. More recommendations can be found in CHAT’s student guide.
