Smart Monitor Awarded U.S. Patent for Systems to Detect Motion Disorders, Including Seizures and Epilepsy

“The granting of this new patent shows the commitment of Smart Monitor to continuously develop game-changing technologies for the management of complex chronic conditions.” – Anoo Nathan, CEO of Smart Monitor

Smart Monitor, the leading provider of clinically validated solutions for managing epilepsy and other chronic conditions, announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office awarded United States Patent Number 10,595,766, entitled “Abnormal Motion Detector and Monitor,” to Smart Monitor (’766 Patent). The ‘766 Patent covers technology for detecting motion related disorders, including seizures and epilepsy.

The ‘766 Patent belongs to a family of patents that includes United States Patent Number 8,075,499 of Smart Monitor. This patent family concerns Smart Monitor’s proprietary technology for providing intelligent detection, monitoring, and alerting of seizures and other conditions.

Systems under the ‘766 Patent include seizure monitors that can access and analyze data from sensors, including accelerometers and cameras. The systems may record data to facilitate further review, analysis and/or diagnosis. A system under the ‘766 Patent may include a wearable device, mobile technology, and cloud-based data analytics to detect a motion pattern. The system may be configured to send an alert to notify of a seizure or an episode, for example to family and caregivers, so they may take timely remedial measures. Data such as details of episodic information and medication adherence may be continuously and seamlessly collected and stored on a secure HIPAA compliant server and provided to clinicians, enabling a more effective management of a condition. Systems under the ‘766 Patent can also be applied to the detection and diagnosis of other disorders and they can be configured on Android and iOS devices.

Smart Monitor’s patent-protected technology has been clinically validated through collaborations with clinics such as Stanford University and University of California, San Francisco.

“The granting of this new patent shows the commitment of Smart Monitor to continuously develop game-changing technologies for the management of complex chronic conditions,” said Anoo Nathan, CEO of Smart Monitor. “We believe our technology is an invaluable tool for persons prone to epileptic seizures and their families or care providers. It facilitates independence, provides enhanced safety and peace of mind, while reducing the overall cost burden of healthcare services through longer periods of remission and control.”
