We know providing personal hygiene-related products isn’t the answer to the homelessness and mental health crises. But it is a small way to reach out to people struggling in the communities where we work and live to let them know we are here and care, not only in May but year-round.

To highlight Mental Health Awareness Month, ServiconCares, the philanthropic arm of Servicon, Southern California’s leading hospital environmental services (EVS) provider and commercial cleaning services company, filled and donated 200 bags of personal products. The bags were donated through nonprofits to help people in the community who are homeless or otherwise struggling through a transitional phase of life.
Hygiene for Improved Mental Health
35 Servicon staff volunteered on May 15, filling bags with products donated by Servicon. The bags included items nonprofits cited as most useful for people who are homeless and others in need, such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap, feminine hygiene products, hydration pads, socks, and even some long-lasting, allergen-free snacks. Servicon volunteers stuffed and delivered 200 bags. The donations were split between Maple Counseling Center and the LGBTQ Center in South Los Angeles, two nonprofits that serve the local communities.
“Mental health is essential to overall well-being and can be negatively impacted by a person’s physical circumstances,” says Servicon President and CEO Laurie Sewell. “We know providing personal hygiene-related products isn’t the answer to the homelessness and mental health crises. But it is a small way to reach out to people struggling in the communities where we work and live to let them know we are here and care, not only in May but year-round.”
The company has implemented several programs recently aimed at safeguarding the mental health of its employees, including providing an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that goes beyond mental health insurance benefits, free access to trained therapists, childcare and eldercare assistance, and time management and financial literacy courses.
Help Throughout the Year
ServiconCares acts on its purpose, “to elevate the industry and create healthy environments for people to thrive,” by giving back to the community in May and throughout the years. In recent months, the company has partnered with local nonprofits, sponsoring several events in the last few months, including the Food Finders’ annual Stomp Out Hunger, a tree planting event with the TreePeople, the Walk for Kids to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities, and a women’s networking brunch held at Servicon’s headquarters in honor of Women’s History Month—to name but a few.
