SedMed, a mobility products company formed in 2020, today announced that its gas-spring-powered toilet lift is now available for preorder. The innovative, patent-pending product fits nearly all toilets, operates without electricity and securely mounts directly onto the toilet, supporting up to 80 percent of the user’s weight during the lift.
Sixty percent of injury-related emergencies are caused by falls, with 80 percent of them occurring in the bathroom. Many of these accidents often happen during transfers on and off the toilet. The risks of falls and injuries in the bathroom extend to caregivers as well, who selflessly dedicate themselves to the well-being of others. Over the past three years, SedMed has been continuously refining the product based on feedback from healthcare facilities, including assisted living and rehabilitation hospitals, to successfully align its mobility solution with the specific needs of the market.

“We are always focused on the next best thing to improve the safety and wellness of our residents, so we were excited when SedMed offered us a pilot to try out the device,” said Rachel Little, RN, MSN, LNHA, Director of Clinical Compliance at Lutheran Senior Services (LSS). “The product has proven to be remarkable in its early stages, and in one case we had a resident who almost refused to give it back for further trialing because she loved it so much. Motivated to assist a friend who suffered a stroke and struggled with daily activities such as toileting, Bronen founded SedMed as his senior design project at the University of Connecticut. Within three years, SedMed had transcended its origins as a design project boosted by robust financial support. The company has since secured over $1 million in funding, including $931,000 raised in a seed round, led by Connecticut Innovations, along with an additional $115,000 in grant funding from organizations like CTNext, FORGE, the Connecticut Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, UConn IQ, and the UConn School of Engineering.
In addition to the public launch of its core product, SedMed also unveiled a new website offering convenient preordering. The website also serves as a platform for healthcare facilities to explore options to elevate the perception of their facilities and is a valuable resource for older adults or people with disabilities.
