The Rocky Mountain ADA Center (RMADAC), a member of the National Network of ADA Centers, is pleased to announce it has fully funded the only electric duo racing kart in the world as a gift for those living in the Rocky Mountain region, RMADAC’s area of coverage, and the entire nation to enjoy.
The newly acquired Storm Duo Kart will be housed and utilized by Colorado Springs-based Overdrive Race Way. The cart contains two seats, extremely rare in the go kart marketplace, and is perfect for caregivers to drive people with certain physical disabilities who may not have had an opportunity to race in this manner ever in their lives. In addition, the kart is a great way for parents to drive children and for people to ride together as a racing team.
“We’ve had a wonderful relationship with Overdrive Raceway for many years as the company’s owner is an amputee and has a wonderful heart and insight for providing access to people with disabilities. Each day Overdrive provides opportunities for people with disabilities to get off the sidelines and into the game; and now in this instance participating in fast-paced kart racing in the only duo cart available to the public in the United States and the world,” said Emily Shuman, Deputy Director of the RMADAC. “July 26th marks the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, a landmark civil rights law, and due to public gathering limitations, we decided the best way for our team to celebrate this major anniversary would be to provide a gift to those seeking fun and access to kart racing in Colorado Springs, The Rocky Mountain region and the nation.”
The Storm Duo Kart is available for riding today. The vehicle races at a top speed of 40 MPH and has two steering wheels and an easy to access emergency ‘stop’ button.
“Each and every week we have people with various disabilities visit our track and many aren’t able to operate our current carts designed to assist those with physical obstacles; this never sat well with me,” said Jim Mundle, Owner of Overdrive Raceway. “This is why my team searched all over the world for a solution and we were fortunate to find the only Storm Duo Kart available for sale in the world. As a double amputee myself, I have never allowed my situation to stop me from living a full life and now thanks to the Rocky Mountain ADA Center’s generosity, any person of any ability can now take the reins and race.”
