LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (PRWEB)
April 15, 2022
Long Island Interventions announced that it wanted to remind area residents of its services. “As we see opioid deaths and addiction rates continue increasing each year, we feel that it is important to let people know that they do not have to try to help loved ones on their own,” said a spokesperson for the organization. “We help friends, family members and others close to people who struggle with addiction plan meaningful interventions and connect with addiction specialists. When people plan an intervention right, it is more likely to produce favorable results. Many people who are addicted are in denial, so they are less likely to commit to a treatment plan at first without the right approach.” Addiction specialists the organization works with can also help develop strategies for treatment plans.
According to an article from Spectrum Local News, opioid overdose deaths in New York were up 44% in 2020 from the previous year. All other drug overdose deaths increased by 37%. The New York Times reported that alcohol-related deaths increased 25% in 2020. Addiction problems have only been growing since then. In Nassau County, the leading cause of death among people between the ages of 18 and 35 is drug overdose or poisoning.
“Many people who need treatment for addiction do not get it,” said the Long Island Interventions spokesperson. “Statistics from a well-known addiction treatment center show that 21 million Americans have at least one addiction, but only about 10% get the treatment they need.” The spokesperson also mentioned that mental health conditions can complicate addiction, and they further highlight the need for treatment. “In many cases, an underlying and unmanaged mental health issue may be what leads a person to misuse drugs or alcohol,” said the spokesperson. “Those individuals need treatment for both the addiction and the underlying mental health issue to stay in recovery and see improvements in their quality of life.” Mental health care needs have also increased since the start of the pandemic.
A Household Pulse Survey showed that 25% of adults in New York had depression symptoms and 30% had anxiety symptoms at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. According to research from the National Institutes of Health, about 50% of people who have mental health disorders will develop a substance use disorder as well. The Long Island Interventions representative said that interventions may not be right in all situations. However, the organization offers other planning and referral services for addiction treatment, such as detox, inpatient and outpatient programs. “As life’s difficulties continue for many on Long Island, we want to encourage people to reach out to us if they have a loved one struggling with addiction,” the spokesperson concluded. “We are simply here to help connect people with the right intervention and addiction treatment resources.”
