Picmonic’s creator was the key to my success in medical school. While other classmates created traditional flashcards and struggled to remember them, I was creating visual mnemonic flashcards with Picmonic and remembering facts in a much easier and effective way.

Picmonic, a popular research-proven study tool used by nearly 1 million healthcare students worldwide, has launched a free picture-mnemonic creator platform that enables anyone to create imagery-rich audio-visual flashcards for learning. Since visual learners comprise at least 65% of the world population, Picmonic’s creator platform is poised to revolutionize education by enabling millions who wish to retain hard-to-learn information more efficiently and effectively. Attendees at the EDUCAUSE Annual Conference on October 27-29 (virtual this year) are invited to attend an on-demand session to learn how to create picture-mnemonic flashcards using the powerful Picmonic creator platform.

Educators have long recognized the effectiveness of visual learning and have shifted toward visual teaching for decades, especially as hardware and software technology advances have made video, audio and images readily available and accessible to all. In 2013, a single-center, randomized, subject-blinded, controlled study proved that Picmonic’s approach led to increased retention over 300% while also being strongly preferred by students over text-based study.

Students appreciate the effectiveness of the Picmonic platform, and the ability to create their own Picmonics as well. Carlos Velez states, “Picmonic’s creator was the key to my success in medical school. While other classmates created traditional flashcards and struggled to remember them, I was creating visual mnemonic flashcards with Picmonic and remembering facts in a much easier and effective way. The process of creating Picmonics is so interactive and fun, that you barely have to review them again because they are edged into your long-term memory right away. By combining Picmonic’s vast library of content and the Picmonics I created, I was able to retain all the hard to remember facts I was struggling with and reach my goal of becoming a medical doctor.”

Picmonic subscribers have created over 57,000 Picmonics to date, and many of them have been made publicly available. With the launch of Picmonic’s picture-mnemonic creator platform anyone can now create “Picmonics” — rich multi-media flashcards complete with audio-mnemonic characters and a storyline — in order to learn and retain facts longer. To learn how to do this, view a complete tutorial that also includes instructions on adding recall quiz questions. Educators can easily create and incorporate “Picmonics” into their lecture slides, no matter what topics they teach. Educators can also make the Picmonic visual creator platform available to students for free by incorporating Picmonic in their learning management system (LMS). Creations can be kept private (only the creator can access) or published and made public. About Picmonic

Picmonic is designed to leverage known memory science to increase retention for hard-to-remember facts and difficult concepts, as explained in the white paper “Audio-Visual Picture Mnemonics and Spaced Repetition Can Improve Student Learning”. Nearly 1 million students have used the Picmonic Learning System since the company was founded by medical students in 2013. Students say that Picmonic makes it easier for them to remember “hard to recall” facts, improving grades and increasing board/licensing exam scores.
