Portfolio planning involves several steps, which include the assessment of unmet needs in the space, prioritization, portfolio analysis and risk assessment among others.

Portfolio planning and management is an integral part of the drug development process. Strategic decision-making is critical when determining which drugs to prioritize for development, and for building a robust pipeline for a specific indication or class of drugs. These decisions are key in the path to commercial success and most importantly, getting effective treatments to patients.

Only ten to 20 percent of drugs that make it through the development process end up getting approved and this has remained unchanged for the past several decades. While the COVID-19 pandemic helped the industry and regulatory bodies recognize how drug development can be effectively accelerated, there is still a lot of work to do in achieving better drug approval timelines and rates of success.

Portfolio planning involves several steps, which include the assessment of unmet needs in the space, prioritization, portfolio analysis and risk assessment among others.
