According to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), it’s becoming increasingly common for pet parents to celebrate the holidays with their pets, with 35% of cat owners and 45% of dog owners reportedly planning to get their pets gifts this year.
Pet parents are also finding new ways to include pets in longstanding holiday traditions. For example, many are making Advent calendars full of dog treats instead of chocolates, wrapping up a new toy for each night of Hanukkah, or stuffing Christmas stockings full of favorite treats.
New holiday traditions, too, are becoming the norm for families with pets. Pet parents can take their dog for an evening walk to take in the neighborhood light displays or get their cat matching pajamas for the annual family photo.
The holidays are also a time for pets to give back by signing a holiday card to send to their favorite vet or groomer with a pawprint, or even “sponsoring” a donation of money or supplies to their alma mater animal shelter.
