A study has been published in the journal PLOS ONE that demonstrates the effectiveness of the Invictus Medical Neoasis™ active noise control device to attenuate typical noises in a simulated neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) environment. The study reported that the Neoasis™ device attenuated the alarm sounds from patient monitors, ventilators and other bedside devices that would affect the infants cared for in incubators.
“The problems associated with the effect of NICU noise on the incubated preemie patient are documented in the literature in terms of sleep and weight gain, and effective solutions remain elusive.” said George Hutchinson, Invictus Medical’s Chief Executive Officer. “We are optimistic that this bench-top study foretells a great means of protecting these vulnerable patients.”
The greatest attenuation achieved was 14.4 decibels for a typical patient monitor alarm, equating to a 5.5-fold decrease in sound pressure level that the incubator-oriented patient would experience. The study was conducted in the simulation center of the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, supported by the simulation center’s staff.
