In addition to the premiere of the documentary, the Franklin County Visitors Bureau is showcasing the Letterkenny Italian POW story in the lobby of the 11/30 Visitors Center. The exhibit opens September 6 and is available to view until November 11, 2024.

The History
Before America entered World War II, the U.S. military sought locations for ordinance depots to maintain, store, and issue weapons, ammunition, combat vehicles, equipment, and other military-needed materials. Letterkenny Township in Franklin County PA was selected because of its excellent location along the Atlantic seaboard and its closeness to Washington DC. The depot required thousands of acres of farmland and displaced about 1000 of Franklin County’s 70,000 residents. Any discontentment about the acquisition ceased after the December 7, 1941 strike on Pearl Harbor. Franklin County residents wholeheartedly supported the depot. Less than a years later, the depot was an active part of America’s participation in the Ally effort.
By September 1943, Italy signed an armistice with the Allies, and Italian POWs agreed to sign an allegiance to the United States, In May 1944, 1250 repatriated Italian soldiers came to Letterkenny Depot. They formed the 321st Quartermaster Battalion, helping to order, stock, and ship military supplies and equipment to support the Ally efforts in the Pacific and Europe.
These men missed their homes and loved ones. It was a difficult time. They turned to their faith to guide them, seeking out the counsel of clergy, who wisely suggested channeling the loneliness into beneficial tasks. Out of a melancholy and somber time when war encircled the world and thousands of miles separated the Italian service men from their families, a good and lasting accomplishment emerged. The repatriated soldiers helped to build the depot and a chapel. By using the materials from the farmhouses, barns, and other structures, the men of the ISU incorporated the elements of their homeland into the chapel and created a lasting artifact of a significant time in American and world history.
The Letterkenny Chapel is a prime representation of Italianate architecture with the characteristic square tower, quoined brickwork, and curved arches above the windows and doors. Today, it is maintained by the United Churches of Chambersburg and is adjoined by the Franklin County Veterans and 9/11 Memorial Park. The chapel and park are the launching point of the Franklin County Military Trail of History.
In 1945, Letterkenny Chapel was dedicated by the Pope’s Ambassador to the United States to commemorate peace and reconciliation between Italy and the United States. For more than 35 years, it served as a military chapel for Letterkenny Army Depot. Today, the historic chapel serves as an ecumenical, interfaith and multicultural meeting place of fellowship and worship.

Vival Capital launches $250M fund to accelerate healthcare, sports, and industrial growth in emerging U.S. cities, securing $150M in early investments
LAS VEGAS, Aug. 27, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Correction: Alaska Permanent Fund Did Not Make an Investment.
In our press release, it was stated that the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation was an investor in Vival Capital Management’s $250 million Emerging Cities Fund I. This was incorrect. The Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation has not made an investment in this fund. We apologize for the error and any confusion this may have caused.
Vival Capital Management, LP, a multi-strategy hedge fund, announces the launch of its $250 million Emerging Cities Fund I, targeting public equities and startups that drive business ecosystem growth in emerging cities. With a focus on healthcare technology, sports, and industrials, Vival plans to invest in up to 30 companies over the next few years and is seeing strong value from early investments. The new firm has already secured $150 million in funding.
“I am thrilled to introduce Vival Capital Management,” said Stephen N. Lackey, Founder and Managing Partner, whose background includes managing over a billion dollars in family office and government infrastructure investments.
The fund is backed by several family offices, a hospitality-focused pension fund, and institutional investors like the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation. Emerging Cities Fund I will be capped at $250 million and is on track to reach that number by the fourth quarter of this year, with a second, half-billion-dollar fund launching soon thereafter.
Vival, derived from the word “revival,” is Lackey’s answer to growing demand from fellow investors seeking to align with his successful “total ecosystem model.” This approach focuses on investing in companies that deliver solid financial returns while also contributing to the broader development and capabilities of their headquarters city.
“We’re seeding new business and social ecosystems in places like Las Vegas, where we have been immensely successful, and in cities in the Southwest and Gulf Coast,” stated Lackey. “Over the last decade, Vegas has emerged as a sports and industrial hub, with adjacent industries like tech, healthcare, and film interplaying in town. As the city has grown, so has our success investing in it. Vival knows where the next ecosystems are forming. We are uniquely positioned to foresee economic impacts and accurately forecast investments that transform a good city into a great one and provide significant returns for investors.”
Lackey, who is African American, also highlights the importance of his entry into the hedge fund space as important to his community and to the future of finance professionals of color.
“I am here to win,” Lackey said at a launch event in Las Vegas. “As we continue to meet our funding targets and prepare for future opportunities, Vival Capital Management is committed to driving growth in emerging cities which translates into big wins for our investors and the community.

Frequent mowing is crucial for preventing overgrowth, which can lead to weak roots and an uneven, unsightly lawn. According to BDH Lawn Care, weekly mowing helps grass grow thicker and more evenly by removing the upper portion of the grass blades, which encourages new, healthy growth.
In addition, consistent mowing plays a vital role in reducing thatch buildup—a layer of dead grass, roots, and debris that can prevent water, nutrients, and air from reaching the soil. BDH Lawn Care advises that keeping grass at an optimal height with regular mowing helps clippings decompose more quickly, thus preventing thatch from accumulating and maintaining a lawn’s ability to thrive.
“Weekly mowing is more than just a maintenance task; it’s a critical aspect of lawn care that contributes to the overall health and beauty of your lawn,” said Brian Henry, Owner at BDH Lawn Care. “By sticking to a regular mowing schedule, you can ensure that your lawn remains lush, green, and resilient against weeds and pests.”
Top Benefits of Weekly Lawn Mowing
The One-Third Rule for Mowing
BDH Lawn Care recommends following the “one-third rule” during mowing, which involves never removing more than one-third of the grass blade’s height in a single mow. This practice helps prevent stress on the grass and encourages healthy regrowth, leading to a more resilient and attractive lawn.
About BDH Lawn Care
BDH Lawn Care is a trusted provider of professional lawn care services, offering a full range of solutions, including mowing, fertilization, aeration, pest management, and more. With a focus on quality, customer satisfaction, and sustainable practices, BDH Lawn Care helps homeowners achieve beautiful, healthy lawns.

Author is a retired priest renowned for his social work in Baltimore
BALTIMORE, Md., Aug. 26, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — “The Overcome: A Black Passover” is presented as a much-needed rite of passage for the African American population from victimhood to introducing and promoting and celebrating major victory concepts. Celebrated Baltimore, Md. priest Peter W. D. Bramble shares that his book was written to help black people to redefine their lives in such a way as to recognize the many victories they have already accomplished over the past few centuries.
Using the Jewish Passover as a working paradigm, the book shows that unlike blacks who put their “overcoming” in the future, the Jews of the Bible claimed their victory over Pharoah by establishing a rite, called Passover, before they ever left Egypt. They then made their way through other tragedies by celebrating past victories and looking forward to the next one. Bramble seeks to persuade blacks to do something similar and choose an event, person, and date to declare having overcome. This rite needs to then be incorporated to unify blacks worldwide to help lead lived poised to overcome whatever problems the future holds.
“This is an attempt to re-interpret our history in such a way that we can boldly claim our victories, wrap them up in story and myth and use them to inspire pride in the overwhelming successes of blacks,” said Bramble.
Bramble has also written the companion piece, “Overcome: Rite, Liturgy & Songs,” highlighting songs developed by people who have heard him speak, along with an abbreviated version of “The Overcome: A Black Passover. The book claims that the Civil Rights Movement, crowned by the death and consequent elevation of Dr. Martin Luther King, is that collective victory that must be re-interpreted and celebrated.
“The black community must abandon their fighting/process song ‘We Shall Overcome,” said Bramble, “and boldly replace it with ‘We Have Overcome.’ By doing this, the way will be cleared to celebrate past victories and see ourselves as Overcomers, rather than claiming in song that the real victories are all ahead.”

“After my stroke, I decided that I would keep a diary of my daily improvements since I was home by myself,” said Hayes. “I tried to stop, but a voice kept urging me forward.”
Hayes decided to publish her book to inspire and encourage others in their pursuit of recovery and redemption. She has two other books in the works, and, as a result of the strokes, she typed them all with just the pointer finger on her left hand. This was even more of a challenge because she’s normally right-handed.
“I hope to reach people who are sick like me, who cannot speak out for themselves, to let them know that they are not alone in this desert called life,” said Hayes. “There is an oasis somewhere, just keep trudging on until you find it.”

Los Angeles man Eric Borstein was diagnosed with a terminal illness four years ago. Next month he will walk 160 miles to raise awareness of his condition after responding to treatment.
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 26, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Los Angeles resident Eric Borstein will walk 160 miles from his home in Los Angeles to San Diego beginning Sunday, September 22 to raise awareness of his rare disease, pulmonary hypertension (PH).
After collapsing from massive right heart failure in 2020, Borstein was diagnosed with PH, a disease that causes high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries. There is no cure for this debilitating and life-threatening condition. Four years later, he is marking the occasion with a 160 mile walk down the coast. The 5K will begin at 9:00 am through 11:30 am, starting at the Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica. All are welcome for a morning filled with fun, light refreshments, in and support of those affected by PH.
Borstein hopes that sharing his story will bring together his network and the PH community to amplify awareness and further support research into improved treatments, a cure, and programs. He shared, “One of the things that I’ve always wanted to do, if I can help save one person’s life or if I can help motivate somebody to extend their life, then one day when I’m not here, I’ve done my job. When I was introduced to Team PHenomenal Hope, it just hit me. They’re helping people through the means that I’m actually doing on a daily basis. Anything I can do to get involved to help motivate other patients, I want to do.”
Team PHenomenal Hope board chair Dr. Harrison Farber shared, “We are grateful to Eric and his family and we are thrilled that he is representing our organization while he takes on this incredible challenge.
