The Flourish Lab Announces The Heart of OST Award Winner; Denver-based corporation recognizes, honors afterschool educators who provide positive experiences

Receiving this award represents my growth and how much I have given as a youth professional, given my experience working with the YMCA and Department of Education. It also helps me see that I am worthy of such praise too.

Although the selection was hard, The Flourish Lab recently announced Tania Brown, a supervisor working at the YMCA of Honolulu, as the winner of its inaugural Heart of OST (Out-of-School-Time) Award during its virtual ceremony. The Flourish Lab is a Denver-based newly launched public benefit corporation that offers practical, easy-to-use strategies and tools for youth-serving adults grounded in proven social-emotional practices.

The award honored an OST educator who is continuously making a difference in the lives of young people through afterschool programs. The Flourish Lab received over 40 nominations from OST educators from across the country and recognized them during the virtual event which drew over 50 attendees.

Brown, a Honolulu resident whose prior work includes volunteering for Cap Corps Midwest, a post-graduate service program for young adults in Chicago, Minnesota and Detroit, loves teaching and learning from her young participants. The Flourish Lab staff was impressed with her credentials and resonated with the stories that she shared in her nomination.

“I appreciate being seen,” explained Brown, whose strengths are in STEM, team building, cooking, dance, and social/emotional learning. “It isn’t very often that I am appreciated for my work, especially in a supervisor position. I believe as supervisors we tend to think it is more important to praise others than to receive praise ourselves. Receiving this award represents my growth and how much I have given as a youth professional, given my experience working with the YMCA and Department of Education. It also helps me see that I am worthy of such praise too.”

Amy Brady, The Flourish Lab’s founder, created this award to give the spotlight to these educators describing them as “connectors in their communities.”

“With 50 plus years working with youth and with organizations that work with youth, we see over and over the impact that afterschool educators make in the lives of children,” she said. “They are education’s most unsung heroes. They bring their hearts to all they do. We created this award to bring awareness to this important field and to celebrate the amazing work done outside of the regular school day.”

Lana Hailemariam, partner with The Flourish Lab, knows the importance OST professionals’ roles offer to working families. As a child of a single working mother, she remembers growing up in before and aftercare every day. Afterschool programs provided for her great education and social opportunities and many fond and happy memories.

“When I went to these programs, everyone knew me by name, included me, accepted me, helped me, and also held me accountable. This wasn’t school,” Hailemariam said. “These programs were something different than that and I loved going! The world needs to know about these magical places. Before and after school programs and summer camps are necessities for most hard-working families, as they were for my mom. These OST educators are people who are making the world go round and for many children, OST is the highlight of their day! Why wouldn’t we celebrate these special humans who take care of our most precious hearts and souls, year-round? Truly, we cannot celebrate them enough!”

Ideal Option Releases Patient Outcomes Data to Show Effectiveness of Specialized Treatment for Fentanyl and Polysubstance Use

[ad_1]

Ideal Option, a national leader in outpatient medication-assisted treatment for addiction to opioids, methamphetamine, alcohol and other substances, has released its 2021 Annual Patient Outcomes Report for patients living in New Mexico State.

This report contains an aggregated view of patients’ geographic and demographic characteristics, their stage and duration of care, adherence to medication, and their substance use over time based on lab specimens regularly collected during 2021 from more than 350 patients.

The data support the effectiveness of treating addiction with FDA-approved medications combined with regular lab testing to verify medication adherence, create accountability and ensure patient safety.

Among New Mexico patients who remained in treatment from initiation to the maintenance stage of care during 2021, the report shows:

  • 92% less total opioid use
  • 96% less fentanyl use
  • 95% less heroin use
  • 88% less methamphetamine use
  • 45% less benzodiazepine use

The report also reveals a significant escalation in synthetic drug use in 2021 among enrolling patients, particularly fentanyl. Fentanyl positive rates at enrollment were up by 104% displacing heroin positive rates which were down by 44% compared to 2020. In addition, 44% of patients tested positive for multiple substances at enrollment, most commonly methamphetamine and opioids. Although no FDA-approved medications exist for treating isolated stimulant use disorder, Ideal Option’s data reveals that buprenorphine is highly effective for reducing methamphetamine use among polysubstance users.

“Over the 2020-21 period, positive rates for fentanyl eclipsed the use of all other types of opioids in the enrolling population.” said Tim Kilgallon, CEO at Ideal Option. “Recognizing this, Ideal Option implemented new clinical protocols and programs to better support patients transitioning from fentanyl to buprenorphine and maintained a regular cadence of lab testing to ensure patient safety and adherence to prescribed medications.”

This data corroborates state reports of the prevalent role that fentanyl and methamphetamine now play in the substance use epidemic. Street drugs of all types increasingly contain fentanyl, often masquerading as prescription tablets and capsules.

“Fentanyl overdose is the leading cause of death in New Mexicans ages 18-35,” said New Mexico Representative Tara Lujan. According to the CDC National Center for Health Statistics, there were 569 overdose deaths due to synthetic opioids reported in New Mexico State during the 12-month period ending in November 2021, a 92% increase from the 297 deaths reported during the same period the year before.

Ideal Option has helped more than 50,000 patients through a network of 76 outpatient clinics across 10 states: Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon and Washington.

With no waitlists and most forms of insurance accepted, including Medicare and Medicaid, patients can typically get started on treatment for fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine, alcohol, or other substances within 1-3 business days.

Patients can make an appointment by calling 1.877.522.1275 or visiting http://www.idealoption.com.

About Ideal Option Headquartered in Kennewick, Washington, Ideal Option was founded in 2012 and has since helped more than 50,000 patients through a network of 76 office-based medication-assisted treatment (MAT) clinics across 10 states. In all the communities it serves, Ideal Option collaborates with existing stakeholders and providers to improve the continuum of care. Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth, NFYI and iFoster Raise the Voice of Foster Youth on the National Mall on May 17, 2022

[ad_1]

ENKONE’s mural “The Voice of Foster Care”

The Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth (CCFY), National Foster Youth Institute (NFYI) and iFoster are partnering to amplify the voices of children and youth in foster care at a public exhibition and recognition to be held May 17, 2022 at 11:30 on the National Mall, between 4th and 7th streets, in Washington, DC.

The backdrop for the event is a mural celebrating the foster care community created by world-renowned Getty street artist (and former foster youth) ENKONE, generously commissioned for iFoster by the James Irvine Foundation. ENKONE’s mural will be joined by drawings created by children and youth in the foster care system from across the country expressing their visions of a supportive foster care community.

A making of the ENKONE’s mural can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36C2Vgx4lBc.

Congress established May as National Foster Care Month as an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges of children in the foster care system, and for advocates to encourage Congress to implement policies to improve the lives of these children. As of September 30, 2020, there were 407,493 children in foster care in the U.S.

Members of the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth are joining with NFYI and iFoster to recognize that the lived experiences and opinions of youth are crucial inputs to policies that improve their lives and the child welfare system. CCFY provides a bipartisan forum joining over 100 Members of Congress to discuss and develop policy recommendations to strengthen the child welfare system and improve the overall well-being of youth and families.

“The work we do at the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth is vital to creating change within the lives of youth with lived experience. Most importantly, we believe it is necessary to invite the youth we serve to meet Members of Congress face-to-face at the table where decisions are being made for their own wellbeing,” said Cortez L. Carey, Director of Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth. “This beautifully thought provoking ENKONE mural is an unyielding visual of youth lifting as they climb. We perceive it to represent people helping each other, whether they have firsthand understanding or are an ally of this formation of growth. As an advocate for rehabilitation of the child welfare system, I would like to acknowledge iFoster and NFYI for their continuous achievements of highlighting youth with lived experience as #BeyondResilient and recognizing and trusting them for who they believe they are.”

“Children and youth with lived experience, their caregivers and front-line workers need to be heard,” said Serita Cox, CEO of iFoster. “They live within the foster care system every day and know first-hand what is working, and what needs to be improved. Through our annual survey Voice of the Foster Care Community, the entire spectrum of those with lived experience (youth, caregivers and front-line workers) are sharing their experiences and thoughts on how to help every child in the foster care system achieve their full potential.”

“Art is a powerful tool for advocacy; it is the most potent, visceral way for advocates with first-hand experience to bring to life their child welfare journey. Foster youth sharing their lives with decision makers is key for effective and essential policy and practice reform. That is why foster youth must have a seat at the table every time child welfare policy is discussed – only then can we truly transform the systems that impact children and families,” said Rebecca Louve Yao, Executive Director of NFYI. “This is why NFYI hosts artmaking events for former foster youth, It’s why artwork from our #BeyondResilient campaign has swept from social media to the halls of Congress, and it is why we stand here today in support of this groundbreaking monument to foster youth.”

About the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth

The Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth provides a forum for Members of Congress to discuss and develop policy recommendations to strengthen the child welfare system and improve the overall well-being of youth and families. Co-chaired by Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), Rep. Brenda Lawrence (D-MI), Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), and Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI), the bipartisan Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth joins over 100 Members of Congress discuss the challenges facing all foster youth and develop bipartisan policy initiatives.

About National Foster Youth Institute

Launched in 2012, National Foster Youth Institute was created to organize foster youth and families, foster care alumni, and allies across the country to mobilize around transforming the child welfare system. Over the past decade, NFYI has elevated the voices of thousands of current and former foster youth resulting in transformative change within the child welfare system, a culture shift among decision makers, and the development of professional and organizing skills among these young leaders.

Mount Sinai Receives Landmark Gift from Royalty Pharma to Advance Health Equity

[ad_1]

“This gift significantly enhances Mount Sinai’s ability to understand the factors that contribute to health disparities in the communities that we serve and to develop strategic, resilient solutions that remove barriers to access.” – Dennis Charney, MD

Marking a major advance in its efforts to achieve equity in the delivery of health care, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (Icahn Mount Sinai) announced today that its Institute for Health Equity Research (IHER) has received a landmark $20 million gift over five years from Royalty Pharma plc (Nasdaq: RPRX) and certain members of its management team. The gift will establish the Mount Sinai-Royalty Pharma Alliance for Health Equity Research to support IHER in its ongoing efforts to close the health care disparity gap and translate discoveries into sustainable, scalable initiatives and policies that break down systemic barriers to care among communities in New York City, nationally and globally.

Launched in May 2020, IHER’s mission is to identify, interrogate, and combat health inequities by building a future that is more equitable for all communities, including those that are non-white, low-income, immigrant, uninsured, and LGBTQ+. The disproportionate impact of issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic on these populations has highlighted the need for more rigorous study to identify the root causes and magnitude of disparities, to devise and test innovative solutions, and to take concrete action in response to findings.

“The pandemic has magnified the considerable consequences that health issues and crises create among underserved populations but also created an urgency to address these challenges,” said Dennis S. Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean of Icahn Mount Sinai, and President for Academic Affairs of the Mount Sinai Health System. “This gift significantly enhances Mount Sinai’s ability to understand the factors that contribute to health disparities in the communities that we serve and to develop strategic, resilient solutions that remove barriers to access. We are grateful to Royalty Pharma for this generous gift as well as their partnership as we advance medicine for all patients, families and communities.”

“The Mount Sinai-Royalty Pharma Alliance is an innovative undertaking that has the potential to shape the future of healthcare nationally and internationally,” said Pablo Legorreta, Royalty Pharma’s founder and Chief Executive Officer. “We are excited to partner with Mount Sinai in this comprehensive effort to improve the health and lives of underserved populations.”

Since IHER’s launch in 2020, several ambitions efforts have begun:

  • Data and Research Core: Pioneering work demonstrating a links between genetic, clinical and environmental influences on health, such as on kidney disease disparities.
  • Community Engagement Core: Leading local and national efforts to bring together community, clinical and academic stakeholders to build partnerships to advance COVID-19 vaccine and treatment equity, and diversify those who take part in clinical trials and other studies.
  • Health Care Delivery Science Core: The Task Force to Address the Inclusion of Race in Clinical Algorithms has reviewed race-based clinical algorithms used by providers to make decisions about treatment options and could disadvantage Black and Latino individuals. IHER researchers are also collaborating with clinical departments to use disparities dashboards to identify and eliminate inequities in care.
  • Research Workforce Core: The Exceptional Scholars Program identifies and supports talented Black, Latino, or Native American research faculty who are building careers in biomedical science and a collaboration with Goldman Sachs around their 1 Million Black Women initiative will provide support for upskilling and training diverse hospital employees as well as promote social entrepreneurship in the health sector.
  • Mental Health Equity Research: A talented team is leading national efforts to create and expand capacity of church-affiliated mental health clinics to provide high quality, evidence-based programming in every state in the U.S.

“We must address health inequity and higher burden of disease and premature death in communities of color,” said IHER Director Carol Horowitz, MD, MPH, Professor of Population Health Science and Policy, and Medicine, Dean for Gender Equity in Science and Medicine.

“We have an opportunity to break this cycle with scalable solutions with the support of Royalty Pharma. We will achieve this goal and create new models for delivering equitable care for the incredibly socioeconomically, demographically, and culturally varied populations that we serve.” said IHER Co-Director Lynne Richardson, MD, Professor of Emergency Medicine and of Population Health Science and Policy at Icahn Mount Sinai.

The Mount Sinai-Royalty Pharma Alliance will create opportunities for joint research collaborations that expand and leverage Mount Sinai’s population data—one of the largest and most diverse nationwide – and Royalty Pharma’s existing data and knowledge resources with the goal of generating meaningful insights. As well as volunteer opportunities for Royalty Pharma employees to provide expertise and skills to address IHER’s needs and advance its mission.

PowerMyLearning Honors Student, Family, and Teacher at 2022 Innovative Learning Awards

[ad_1]

News Image

“Today’s students are facing unprecedented trauma from the pandemic. The school community at Brooklyn Landmark Elementary understands that a strong support system engages both teachers and parents,” said Elisabeth Stock, PowerMyLearning CEO and co-founder.

PowerMyLearning, a K-12 nonprofit that unlocks the power of collaboration between families, teachers and students, recognized Brooklyn Landmark Elementary for exemplary resilience throughout the pandemic. At the nonprofit’s Innovative Learning Awards on Tuesday, May 10, a student-family-teacher “trio” was honored with the Triangle Award for demonstrating how teachers and families both play a significant role in academic achievement and student wellbeing.

“Today’s students are facing unprecedented trauma from the pandemic resulting in a critical need to double-down on student wellbeing. The school community at Brooklyn Landmark Elementary understands that a strong support system engages both teachers and parents,” said Elisabeth Stock, PowerMyLearning CEO and co-founder. “That is why PowerMyLearning gives our Triangle award to an exceptional student, caregiver, and teacher each year.”

The Triangle Award winners from Brooklyn Landmark Elementary are:

  • Jahid, Student of the Year
  • Keryan Henry, Parent of the Year
  • Nusrat Sikder-Ali, Teacher of the Year

“I’m proud of Jahid, Keryan and Mrs. Sikder for their leadership in closing the gap between school and home,” said Joyce Beckles-Knights, principal of Brooklyn Landmark Elementary School. “With PowerMyLearning’s support, our school community has united our scholars, teachers, and families with learning that extends from school to home.”

PowerMyLearning is a national K-12 nonprofit with a track record of accelerating student learning by up to four months and improving key student wellbeing outcomes by 15 percent. PowerMyLearning generates these outcomes by building the capacity of teachers and families to better support student learning and team up with one another in that effort– something the organization refers to as the “Triangle Approach.”

“Through PowerMyLearning, I’ve learned small yet impactful ways to better my instruction. For example, implementing ‘think time’ for my students to reflect and internalize what they’ve learned and adding classical music to facilitate reflection have supported my students’ learning and wellbeing,” said Nusrat Sikder-Ali, teacher at Brooklyn Landmark Elementary and Triangle Award Teacher of the Year recipient. “I’m looking forward to continuing to engage students and parents through the Triangle Approach so that we can achieve more, together.”
