Optometrist Melody Huang confirms Fighter Pilot Supplements’ product VELOXEYE™ is an Eye Health Game Changer and takes a Deep Dive into Eye/Brain Performance Ingredients.
Whether you’re taking flight or hitting the ground running, this proprietary blend can help get you to the top.
A simple definition of reaction time is how quickly one responds to a stimulus. This response includes the amount of time required to identify a situation, decide what reaction will occur, and activate the required muscles. For pilots, athletes, and anyone else looking to achieve optimal performance, minimizing reaction time is essential.
Studies have documented the mean reaction time to a visual stimulus is approximately 180 to 200 milliseconds (ms). Comparatively, auditory reaction time is the fastest reaction time at 140 to 160 ms. Although research indicates athletes have lower visual reaction times versus non-athletes, there is always room for improvement.
How supplements can boost visual processing
Visual processing speed measures how fast the brain can react to what the eyes are seeing. There are several ways in which nutritional supplements can aid in this process.
Lutein and zeaxanthin
These fat-soluble carotenoids comprise the majority of pigment found in the macula. The macula is responsible for detailed, central vision, along with most of our color vision. Lutein and zeaxanthin have blue-light filtering properties that protect the macula from blue light damage and enhance visual acuity and sensitivity.
Additionally, research shows that increasing levels of lutein and zeaxanthin improve visual processing speeds [and various cognitive function] in healthy adults.
Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus)
This dark blue-purple berry contains high concentrations of anthocyanins, which are water-soluble pigments with potent antioxidant properties. Bilberry extract has been shown to have positive effects on the development or progression of eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal degeneration.
Interestingly, British pilots during World War II consumed bilberry jam in hopes of improving their night vision. Some research supports this theory. A study following 30 healthy, nearsighted adults found that taking … bilberry extract for one month improved accommodation (focusing ability) and night vision.
Chromium picolinate
Chromium is a naturally occurring metal found in the body and certain foods. Chromium picolinate is the form best absorbed by the body. Although chromium is often used to help control blood glucose, lower cholesterol, and promote weight loss, there are other health benefits.
A study showed that daily supplementation … of chromium picolinate improved brain function in older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Additionally, participants taking the chromium supplement displayed faster fine motor speed compared with participants receiving the placebo.
Reach your maximum potential
All of these nutrients are found in Fighter Pilot Supplements’ VELOXEYE™. Whether you’re taking flight or hitting the ground running, this proprietary blend can help get you to the top.
