On 6th Annual #NationalHealthyFats Day, Here’s One Rite of Spring: Praise Animal Fats

While some like to chew the fat, those in the know realize that fat is to savor.

So says the Healthy Fats Coalition (HFC), an educational initiative dedicated to ensuring that animal fats receive the love they deserve. Under the auspices of the HFC and coinciding with the arrival of spring, March 21 marks the sixth annual #NationalHealthyFatsDay, a celebration of traditional healthy animal fats – pork lard, beef tallow, duck fat, goose fat and the like – that deliver unbeatable flavor to restaurants, fast food operations and home kitchens every day of the year.

For this year’s observance, the HFC has compiled a brief ode to healthy fats, with insights from cultural observers, casual eaters and foodies alike.

National Healthy Fats Day is the brainchild of the HFC, a group of like-minded organizations, companies and individuals that have developed a new educational initiative dedicated to the proposition that healthy fats aren’t merely having a moment – they’re here to stay, as an essential part of the American diet. Its mission is simple: affirm that animal fats deserve a central place in the American diet and in the popular imagination.

For National HFD 2023, some morsels to digest:

  • Throughout my life, I have tried to share my belief that getting and staying healthy doesn’t have to feel like work. My life is not about deprivation; I don’t diet or slave away in a gym. What I do is eat clean, nutritious, real food. I enjoy delicious meals with healthy fats, I eat until I am full and satisfied, and I remain thin. – Suzanne Somers
  • When you go to the grocery store, you find that the cheapest calories are the ones that are going to make you the fattest – the added sugars and fats in processed foods. – Michael Pollan
  • I eat the basic food groups: fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, good fats and oils. I do have butter on my bread because it’s delicious. I eat meat, especially chicken, sparingly, because I’m not a good cook. – Maye Musk
  • I make lots of casseroles that have protein, veggies, carbs and good fats all together. – Tori Spelling
  • Increase your consumption of healthful fats like extra virgin olive oil, avocado, grass-fed beef, wild fish, coconut oil, nuts and seeds. At the same time, keep in mind that modified fats like hydrogenated or trans fats are the worst choices for brain health. – David Perlmutter
  • Do not be fooled, your diet needs a daily dose of all kinds of fats if you want to be healthy. – Chloe Madeley
  • To the degree you eat less of the bad carbs and fats and enough of the good carbs and fats, you’re likely to look better, feel better, lose weight and gain health. – Dean Ornish
  • Some antiquated diet books will tell you to shun all fats if you want to lose weight, but in reality, it’s not healthy to eliminate fat from our diets altogether. – Harley Pasternak
  • I like fats. I think fat is important. I think there is a reason we have it. Obviously it’s part of our dietary makeup, so I don’t avoid it. – Seth Rollins

The Coalition also promotes #NationalBeefTallow Day on July 13 (coinciding with National French Fry Day) and #NationalLardDay, December 8, one day ahead of National Pastry Day, Dec. 9. The HFC’s message for each day: mark the occasion by tasting the difference yourself.
