Nyman passionately reiterated how, “This crisis is not going away, we cannot continue to look away and ignore this issue … Lives are at stake, we must act now.”

Break Free NYFW, a runway show with a cause, announces their support of Daniel’s Law, named after the late Daniel Prude who lost his life while in police custody while experiencing a mental health crisis.

The bill for Daniel’s Law proposes the creation of state and regional counsels to oversee crisis response. It further proposes to create mental health response teams, reducing the need for police response and thereby decreasing the use of force on those most in need of compassion.

Attendees of the showcase will be urged to sign a petition with information on how to contact their state legislature at the conclusion of the show, with guest speaker, Kimberly Blair, the Director of Public Policy and Advocacy for NAMI NYC, delivering a passionate speech on the law and how to get involved in advocating for mental health legislation.

The founder of the Break Free Foundation, Alexandra Nyman, joined Blair at a rally on Monday to support the #PeerNotPolice rally and went on to testify in front of the city council against Mayor Adams’ forced hospitalization policy for matters of mental health. On Tuesday, Nyman joined NAMI NYC for their advocacy day to advocate to her state legislatures for the passage of Daniel’s law and spoke at a news conference in support of the Safer Consumptions Services Act.

In her speech, Nyman passionately reiterated how “this crisis is not going away, we cannot continue to look away and ignore this issue and simply hope it will go away or get better by throwing valuable resources into policing and further criminalizing this dire issue. Lives are at stake, we must act now.”

The up-and-coming runway show will feature fashion designers Ashley Alt of VALT, Kelsey Zephyr of Zephyr, Daniel Ukiri of Dukiri Apparel, Ladycat, and Just Us Kidz Productions. With performances by AGT’s Wyn Starks and Good Boy Fashion, and MCing by Shaye Troha.

The Break Free NYFW Designer Showcase is being held this Saturday, February 11th, at Daylight Studios. Doors open at 5 pm, with the show beginning at 6 pm.

A majority of the proceeds from this showcase will go towards the Break Free Foundation’s scholarship fund, which provides scholarships for those seeking treatment for a substance use disorder through attending a rehabilitation center and outpatient program.

All of our sponsors, such as the Realization Center, Lyre’s, and All the Bitter, our speakers, designers, and performers have come together to share the story of how mental health, co-occurring disorders, and substance use has impacted their lives, and to raise awareness on Daniel’s Law and the dire need of its passage.

The Break Free NYFW Designer Showcase will be held this Saturday, February 11th at 450 W 31st Street. Tickets are available at Eventbrite.com.
