Awareness month is a time for everyone to do their part in working toward earlier diagnosis, better treatment, and cure. We wanted to create the opportunity for everyone, inside and outside of the community, to participate.

November is pulmonary hypertension month (PH), and nonprofit Team PHenomenal Hope is hosting a month long celebration of activities called the Tour of PHenomenal Hope to amplify awareness.
PH is a rare disease that causes high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs, which puts unnecessary stress on both the heart and then lungs. Currently, there is no cure, and, eventually, it can be fatal. One of the most aggressive symptoms of the disease is shortness of breath, which prevents patients from being able to do ordinary things, such as climbing the stairs, without becoming breathless and exhausted.
In an effort to cultivate widespread awareness and involvement, Team PH has put together a month-long list of events that encompasses education, competition, conversation, and virtual participation. From virtual town halls and Twitter chats led by leading PH medical professionals, to a live Zoom stationary bike competition, to an all-inclusive physical activity tracking Let Me Be Your Lungs challenge, Team PH wanted there to be something for everyone.
“Awareness month is a time for everyone to do their part in working toward earlier diagnosis, better treatment, and cure. We wanted to create the opportunity for everyone, inside and outside of the community, to participate,” shared executive director Linda Appleby.
The Tour of PHenomenal Hope’s virtual town halls on November 4th, November 11th, and November 18th are a special offering with a prestigious line-up of PH specialists from around the globe, including Dr. John Ryan from the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Utah, Dr. Jean Luc Vachiery of the Erasme Academic Hospital in Brussels, and Dr. Jean Elwing from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
While the organization offers programs and services to support the PH community, it started out as an ultra-endurance team and fundraising program. Inspired by our original vision of the organization, Team PH has mirrored the Tour of PHenomenal Hope to that of a professional cycling race.
Team PH’s co-founder and president, Dr. Patricia George shared, “Similarly to the Grand Tours of cycling, which bring us different types of races each day (flat, sprinting stages, mountain stages, time trials), we have organized our tour into different types of stages, from educational stages, town halls covering topics in pulmonary hypertension, to our #LetMeBeYourLungs Challenge for everyone, and finally, the capstone Tour of PHenomenal Hope Championship Stage Race, where we will feature a live race of cyclists, and their patient partners, as they sweat it out for all the glory.”
The Tour of PHenomenal Hope is supported by Team PH’s industry sponsors: Janssen, Acceleron, Altavant, United Therapeutics, and CVS Specialty.
