According to Dr. Buckley “With Restylane® Contour, our pallet of filler consistencies has expanded and that allows us to further refine our outcomes.”

Defined and plump facial cheeks are a sign of youth, but as Zoom calls have shown many in their 40s and beyond, the once youthful contour of the mid-face descends with age taking cheeks along for the ride.
Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Richard E. Buckley, Medical Director of MilfordMD Cosmetic Dermatology Surgery & Laser Center in Milford, Pennsylvania, has been using Galderma’s newly approved hyaluronic acid filler Restylane® Contour to non-surgically rejuvenate patients’ midfaces for nearly six months and says results are impressive and natural.
“The approval gives us an important new option in non-surgical facial rejuvenation,” says Dr. Richard E. Buckley Cosmetic Surgeon and Medical Director of MilfordMD Cosmetic Dermatology Surgery & Laser Center. Restylane® Contour is the right tool for that job.”
The FDA approved Restylane® Contour in late June 2021 for cheek augmentation and correction of shape or volume differences in the midface region (contour deficiencies) in people over the age of 21, according to the FDA. [Restylane® Contour – P140029/S032 | FDA]
It is one of a new group of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers in the U.S, including Restylane® Defyne and Restylane® Refyne, that are formulated with XpresHAn Technology™. This XpresHAn Technology™, according to Galderma’s research, results in a smooth, injectable gel that integrates into the skin for natural, dynamic expression in motion. Hyaluronic acid, or HA, dermal fillers help restore natural HA levels that diminish with age, resulting in volume loss, wrinkles and folds on the face. But when it comes to restoring a youthful look to the midface, it’s more than simply injecting filler, according to Dr. Buckley.
“High patient satisfaction is all about contour, shape, structure and motion dynamics. While a big reason for natural results is a physician’s skill, the product he or she uses also makes a difference,” he says. “Restylane® Contour is technologically advanced to allow us to repair and restore both static and dynamic motion skin changes. It restores volume and diminishes folds, grooves, furrows and wrinkles.”
The FDA approved Restylane® Contour based on a phase 3 study conducted at centers throughout the U.S. Researchers found that 91% of patients continued to see improvement in midface fullness 12 weeks after injection. The results may last up to 48 weeks, more than 11 months, or longer. The filler was well tolerated in the study.
“The XpresHAn Technology in this filler has been used around the world to treat more than 1.5 million patients to date. As in the studies, we have found that patients are overall very happy with their results and think the treatment maintains their natural facial dynamics,” Dr. Buckley says. Clinicians must be consummate students of anatomy and aging to achieve natural appearances with procedures they do to restore youthful facial and body contours, according to Dr. Buckley. “There are so many people injecting substances these days who are not well versed in anatomical details and the science of structural changes that happen with aging. One must truly understand those details and couple that understanding with experience to understand what needs to be done, or not done, to achieve great aesthetically pleasing long-lasting results,” Dr. Buckley says. “With Restylane® Contour, our pallet of filler consistencies has expanded and that allows us to further refine our outcomes.”
