Nevada Department of Taxation Approves Ziel’s APEX as Cannabis Mold Solution

APEX by Ziel is radio frequency equipment to treat yeast and mold count in cannabis. APEX is used by Tahoe Hydro and is the only approved mold treatment method by the Nevada Department of Taxation.

This solution is a triple-win for the state, protecting consumer safety, providing cultivators a cost-effective and organic pathway to bring their product to market, and maximizing tax revenue for the State of Nevada and its citizens.

Ziel, creators of APEX, radio frequency equipment that reduces microbial pathogens such as yeast and mold in cannabis, has been approved for use by the State of Nevada, and is currently the only remediation technology approved for cultivators by the Department of Taxation. The technology was recently featured in a story on KTVN-TV evening news, the CBS Reno affiliate.

In August, tainted cannabis batches triggered two health advisories and product recalls in Nevada. Subsequently, the Nevada Department of Taxation opened an investigation on September 16th after multiple testing failures by an independent lab found high levels of yeast and mold present on cannabis sold in three Las Vegas dispensaries. The Nevada limit for yeast and mold is 10,000 colony-forming units per gram; a follow-up test by the Nevada Department of Agriculture found cannabis with yeast and mold levels of 390,000 cfu/g, nearly 40 times the legal threshold.

APEX offers a chemical-free, organic technology that reduces total yeast and mold count in cannabis while retaining potency and terpenes. Ziel’s APEX technology is currently used by some of the largest cultivators in North America. Three cultivators have adopted APEX into their standard processing procedures in Nevada, remediating 100 percent of their product prior to distribution to retail dispensaries, including Tahoe Hydro, an award-winning cannabis cultivation company located in Carson City that has distribution in Las Vegas and throughout Nevada. Additional clients include Los Sueños Farms, the largest outdoor cannabis farm in the country, and two of the “big five” licensed producers in Canada.

“Before incorporating APEX into our cultivation processes, we were losing up to 28 percent of our product to testing failures,” explained Mark Bruno, chief operating officer and co-founder of Tahoe Hydro, which exclusively uses 374 Labs for all testing. “We are now consistently meeting our regulatory requirements, which are among the most stringent in the country, while also meeting our customer’s expectations for the high quality our brand is known for. APEX improves our bottom line and most of all, we sleep easier knowing we are providing safe cannabis to consumers.”

374 Labs, a trusted laboratory that was the first in the state to achieve ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation, which guarantee consistent and accurate test results, has analyzed thousands of pounds of flower in Nevada.

“We have seen firsthand the powerful results of remediating cannabis through radio frequency treatment, and companies that use APEX have product that consistently passes testing requirements,” commented Alec Garcia, a principal at 374 Labs. “The technology works. We have analyzed the data and can see industry-wide benefits as more and more cultivators adopt this technology as the gold standard in remediation.”

APEX operates by using radio frequency to reverse the polarity of water molecules in the plant’s moisture. The water molecules oscillate 27 million times a second, generating heat volumetrically, killing pathogens throughout the flower based on Ziel’s proprietary processing parameters. APEX treats up to 20 pounds of cannabis in less than 15 minutes of process time.

“We are honored to be approved by the Nevada Department of Taxation as the only authorized remediation method for cultivators,” explains Arthur de Cordova, co-founder of Ziel. “This solution is a triple-win for the state, protecting consumer safety, providing cultivators a cost-effective and organic pathway to bring their product to market, and maximizing tax revenue for the State of Nevada and its citizens.”
