NeuroFlow, the leading provider of digitally integrated behavioral health solutions, has compiled a report on COVID-19’s impact on the psychological welfare of their substantial user base.
The company’s data science and product teams found that between March 1st, 2020 and June 30th, 2020, user engagement with their mental wellness mobile app increased as daily physical activity declined.
When analyzing the month-over-month increase in clicks to the “Find a Therapist” icon within the NeuroFlow app, a rapid spike appears followed by a new emerging baseline of higher clicks. April 2020 shows a 106% increase in clicks compared to that of January 2020, correlating to the time frame when many states imposed stay-at-home orders and new guidelines with regards to social distancing.
“Prior to COVID-19, 57% of Americans were undiagnosed or untreated for a mental illness. It’s our hope that if there’s one positive in all of this, greater awareness begins to encourage more people to seek clinical treatment for underlying symptoms,” said NeuroFlow Vice President of Product Julia Kastner. “The reality is that more individuals are experiencing depression, anxiety, and social isolation since the beginning of the pandemic. It’s our job to illuminate this problem and make care more accessible through technology.”
Anonymized submissions to the app’s journaling feature were also analyzed during this period to improve the platform’s risk stratification model. An uptick in users reported experiencing increased stress or anxiety due to both health and economic stressors associated with COVID-19.
The platform also noticed a reduction in steps and daily movement for users, dropping off significantly in mid-March. In January 2020, users average daily steps were 3,427, whereas between March 1st and June 30th, users average daily steps dropped to 2,894 (a roughly 16% dip).
“People have accelerated their adoption of technology to manage the peaks and valleys of the pandemic,” said NeuroFlow Senior Medical Advisor Michael Consuelos, MD. “To be most helpful during this period of uncertainty, technology should work to bridge the gap between clinical professionals and patients, allowing everyone from every background to receive the appropriate level of care.”
This kind of engagement is helping clinical professionals make more timely decisions and we need to continue this progress. NeuroFlow’s technology is now used by more than 150 providers, plans, and military organizations across the country. The company has been an advocate and catalyst for increasing access to actionable data in all care settings.
