MicroReplay Discovers People Incorrectly Disinfect Their High-Touch Devices

The COVID-19 global pandemic is heightening everyone’s awareness of keeping surfaces clean and disinfected: Kitchen counters, coffee tables, and, of course, electronic devices. After all, a device like a smartphone, tablet, or laptop will accumulate bacteria that could cause the coronavirus. Unless someone is wiping the device down properly, the virus could spread through a house or office.

MicroReplay, a specialized computer repair company with expertise in fixing liquid damaged MacBooks and providing service parts to schools and other computer repair companies, wanted to know how their customers are taking precautions to stop the spread of COVID. The staff was curious to know if anyone who owns expensive “high-touch” devices are keeping them disinfected.

The company found that in a commissioned survey with over 300 device owners in the US, nearly everyone is taking the right precautions to clean their devices. Over three-fourths of respondents use the recommended isopropyl alcohol and are not spraying it directly onto the device. However, several answerers said they are using products that will damage their devices or cleaners not known to kill the virus that causes COVID. Other survey takers said they are not following the manufacturer’s instructions and are keeping their devices too wet. Both situations can lead to liquid damage, which affects internal components.

“The results of our survey were surprising,” said Joseph Kouyoumjian, President of MicroReplay. “While many people said they are cleaning their devices in a way that prevents the spread of COVID, several respondents did not know what these products do to their new tablet or smartphone is eye-opening. This points to a need to further educate device owners on how to go about cleaning their devices. After all, no one wants to clean their laptop, accidentally break it and have to pay for repairs.”

Aside from doing research-based cleaning, the company is busy repairing Chromebooks and supplying service parts for other computers and tablets for schools going remote.
