The CDC estimates that between October 2019 and April 2020, up to 59 million people in the United States became ill with the flu, leading to between 410,000 and 740,000 hospitalizations and between 24,000 and 62,000 deaths.
NEW YORK (PRWEB)
December 08, 2020
Helping to conclude National Influenza Vaccination Week, Mediaplanet today announces the launch of this December’s edition of “Fighting the Flu.” This campaign advocates for the health and safety of not only ourselves but the others around us.
While most people fully recover from bouts of flu, in some cases the illness can become extremely dangerous or even fatal. The CDC estimates that between October 2019 and April 2020, up to 59 million people in the United States became ill with the flu, leading to between 410,000 and 740,000 hospitalizations and between 24,000 and 62,000 deaths. Young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with chronic disease or weak immune systems are at high risk from the flu, which attacks the lungs, nose, and throat. Symptoms include fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, congestion, runny nose, headaches, and fatigue. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain relievers may help with symptoms, but the flu is treated primarily with rest and fluid to let the body fight the infection on its own. An annual vaccine can help prevent the flu and limit its complications.
The print component of “Fighting the Flu” is distributed within today’s edition of USA TODAY in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, DC, Dallas, Houston, Detroit, San Francisco, South Florida, Atlanta, Denver, Baltimore, Philadelphia, North/Central Florida, Carolinas, & Seattle, with a circulation of approximately 200,000 copies and an estimated readership of 600,000. The digital component is distributed nationally, through a vast social media strategy, and across a network of top news sites and partner outlets. Three years ago, professional photographer Latasha Haynes, who lives with her family in Tacoma, Washington, was healthy, active, and busy. She traveled the world for her photography business and loved to volunteer through educational programs for women. But in January, she started to feel sick. She thought she caught a cold or virus from a family member and figured she’d feel better soon. But weeks passed and her symptoms, including a cough, loss of appetite, and exhaustion, got worse, eventually developing into a life-threatening influenza illness requiring hospitalization.
Haynes’ near-death experience with the flu inspired her to become an advocate with Families Fighting Flu (FFF), a national, nonprofit advocacy organization that’s dedicated to protecting children, families, and communities against the flu. The women’s health advocate encourages all adults and children older than six months to get an annual flu vaccination, the best preventive measure against influenza. As part of this campaign, Haynes is sharing her story and what you can do to prevent flu.
This campaign was made possible with the support of the CDC, Families Fighting Flu, National PTA, American Society for Microbiology, The Allergy and Asthma Network, HealthyWomen, AAOHN, Halosil, Green Goo, Sambucol, Stogo, RTB MED, GoodState, Crane USA, Pro Solutions Direct & Precision Genetics.
