With 29 million people diagnosed and an estimated 8 million undiagnosed, about 10 percent of the entire United States population is living with diabetes

In support of National Diabetes Awareness Month, Mediaplanet today announces the launch of this December’s edition of “Diabetes Awareness.” This campaign partners with leading healthcare professionals, associations, and relevant influencers to educate millions on the causes, symptoms, and treatment of diabetes, as well as research being done for a possible cure. It debunks myths often associated with diagnosis and inspires hope for the diabetic community.

With 29 million people diagnosed and an estimated 8 million undiagnosed, about 10 percent of the entire United States population is living with diabetes. Diabetes remains the seventh leading cause of death in the United States and is associated with countless additional health complications such as unhealed wounds that can lead to amputations, eye damage leading to possible blindness, and kidney failure. Even though the disease is extremely common, many are still unaware of the causes and symptoms of diabetes and therefore lack the tools and resources needed to successfully manage a diagnosis.

Cover star, actor Victor Garber, says in an exclusive interview that new technologies have made managing his type 1 diabetes a lot simpler than when he was first diagnosed at age 12. But he still works every day to find peace and acceptance in his daily life. He says, “I still have a love of acting and being with my close friends, which provides a balance that usually helps me deal with the intricacy of type 1. When I see the disease as an opportunity to grow, that is usually a very good day.”

This campaign was made possible with the support of Victor Garber, Brec Bassinger, MiMedx, SweetLeaf, the American Heart Association, Medela, Swift Medical, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, DiabetesSisters, the American Optometric Association, Mila Clarke Buckley, and Jillian Rippolone.

The print component of “Diabetes Awareness” is distributed within today’s edition of USA Today in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Washington DC/Baltimore, ad any more here markets, with a circulation of approximately 200,000 copies and an estimated readership of 600,000. The digital component is distributed nationally, through a vast social media strategy, and across a network of top news sites and partner outlets.
