MCG Health, part of the Hearst Health network and an industry leader in technology-enabled, evidence-based guidance, has named Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC) a recipient of its 2022 Richard L. Doyle Award for Innovation and Leadership in Healthcare. The Richard L. Doyle Award for Innovation and Leadership in Healthcare is awarded annually to two organizations — one payer and one provider — that use MCG solutions in exceptional ways to achieve optimal care. Mary Washington Healthcare was recognized as the provider winner for its innovative care model which reduced the number of days patients needed to be hospitalized.
For their winning initiative, Mary Washington Healthcare, a Virginia-based healthcare system, shifted to a centralized care coordination model which helped reach their goal of reducing excessive hospital length of stay and improving staff efficiencies to create a positive impact on the patient experience.
Leveraging MCG Indicia for Admission Documentation with Synapse, a SMART on FHIR application, in conjunction with a redesigned care coordination model and hospital operating system, the Mary Washington Healthcare team reduced their observed to expected length of stay resulting in 1,600 fewer excess days per month. This resulted in Mary Washington Healthcare moving from the bottom 10 percent for length of stay to the top 10 percent according to their Epic database/benchmark group. Excess days in the hospital can have negative ramifications on a patient’s experience due to a greater risk for infection, potential safety issues, and unexpected financial impacts.
Reducing excess days also had a profound impact on Mary Washington Healthcare’s resource utilization. Caring for patients who were staying beyond their target date required additional staff daily during a time of critical staffing shortages. Reducing excess days allowed Mary Washington Healthcare to optimize the use of existing resources ultimately decreasing their nursing premium costs. The implementation of the new model also resulted in improvements such as:
-
Reduced observation status rates - Faster diagnostic turn-around times
- More efficient processes for safe and appropriate patient discharge
“Mary Washington Healthcare’s implementation of MCG Indicia for Admission Documentation technology has enhanced our new care coordination model,” says Mary Washington Healthcare’s COO and CMO, Christopher Newman, MD. “The tool supports timely, accurate admission status which drives care team alignment on length of stay and documentation for reimbursement.”
“Mary Washington Healthcare’s implementation of an innovative care coordination model along with evidence-based practices illustrates their commitment to improving the patient experience,” said MCG President and CEO, Jon Shreve. “We congratulate the Mary Washington Healthcare team on winning the Doyle Award and we hope these impressive results serve as an inspiration to other hospital systems.”
The Richard L. Doyle Award will be presented to the Mary Washington team during MCG’s annual Client Forum in Orlando, Fla., May 7-9, 2023.
