“Typically we engage with three or four face-to-face meetings during the sales cycle,” said Chris Lamont, Picis Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “But because of COVID restrictions, we had a half-day meeting in-person and ended up concluding the rest of the project remotely.”

Picis, global developer of surgical management software, has announced the sale of their renowned perioperative suite to a large hospital on Long Island, New York.

It began as an opportunity to provide the Picis perioperative software suite to a customer who was losing support of theirs. However, there was more at stake. Time was of the essence.

The ultimate success of this venture demonstrated Picis’ understanding of changing market dynamics, their close working relationships with their partners, and their flexibility and resourcefulness with customers during the taxing circumstances of the COVID pandemic.

Bridging Gaps in Care

In early 2020, a major anesthesia device manufacturer announced they would no longer develop or support software for their popular perioperative suite in North America. Thus, they had a number of customers that would need a replacement solution.

Hospitals continue discovering the myriad benefits of electronic perioperative suites. These suites fully automate scheduling, pre-admission testing, pre-op on the day of surgery, nursing documentation, anesthesia documentation, PACU documentation and reporting – producing a single, contiguous patient record. One of the biggest benefits of Picis automation is that clinicians spend more time focused on patient care. And we have found that an automated solution also can potentially drive improved financial and operational results.

Chris Lamont, Picis Vice President of Sales and Marketing, sent his Long Island client a proposal for the Picis perioperative suite in March of 2020. And he knew this was not the only facility facing this circumstance. Because of the strong working relationship between partners, Lamont focused on all existing customers that were on this platform.

The Long Island client transformed its perioperative environment with Picis complete perioperative suite, including PreOp Manager, OR Manager, Anesthesia Manager, PACU Manager, and the SmarTrack Next patient tracking tool.

One of the reasons for choosing the Picis perioperative suite was how it interfaces seamlessly with hundreds of different devices. This eliminates the inconvenience of using third-party vendors to integrate devices, or the need to purchase expensive hardware add-ons.

Overcoming COVID Restrictions

All of this activity occurred amid the COVID lockdowns. “I didn’t have the opportunity to meet [the team at the Long Island hospital] in person before they signed this deal,” Lamont says. Based in Canada, he wasn’t able to cross the border. Undeterred, Picis sent Theresa Sullivan, their Director of Sales Operations, to fly up from Texas and demonstrate the perioperative suite.

Lamont goes on to say, “Typically we engage with three or four face-to-face meetings during the sales cycle. But because of COVID restrictions, we had a half-day meeting in-person and ended up concluding the rest of the project remotely.” To this day, Picis continues conducting much of its sales and product support remotely, saving clients and the company time and money, while still creating excellent relationships and delivering impactful results.

In this case and many others, marketplace intelligence, partner collaboration, ingenuity and an innovative product line have all helped Picis lead the industry while benefitting hospitals and patients alike.
