“The commitment from DARPA validates the power of our approach that combines advances in natural and quantitative sciences with cutting-edge technology to solve fundamental problems.”

Today, the Laboratory for Research in Complex Systems (LRC), is announcing it has won a prestigious US-wide competition and received a grant award from the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which funds emerging technologies, through their polyplexus program. With this financing, LRC will study the development of complexity in biological systems.

“The commitment from DARPA validates the power of our approach that combines advances in natural and quantitative sciences with cutting-edge technology to solve fundamental problems,” said Dr. Shailesh Date, founder and CEO of LRC Systems. “The award will provide seed-funding to a crucial area of the project aimed at developing a computational model of biological complexity.”

The evolution of multicellular, higher order forms from a few organic molecules in primordial soup is one of the most important, and, as yet, unanswered questions in the sciences. Scientists at the LRC are trying to decipher why biological systems become complex in the first place, and how evolutionary hurdles act on systems to induce the development of complex features and attributes. By combining evolutionary theory, statistical physics models and knowledge of biochemistry, LRC scientists will aim to identify first principles of biocomplexity, and ascertain if systems could be tweaked and nudged towards exploring interesting new functional spaces.
