Leading Private Primary Care Provider in Central London Starts 4-Day Week Work Scheme

A leading private primary care provider in Central London has today started a new pilot scheme, trialing a 4-day week for its team members. The Harley Street Health Centre, established in 1998, remained open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, including the first lockdown which saw most clinics close their doors, supporting thousands of patients.

The pilot scheme is inspired by positive findings in research in Scandinavia and Scotland’s working hour trials. It aims to improve wellbeing and change focus from productivity to sustainability and employee mental health promotion.

Managing Director, Alya Shakir commented: “Our team worked extremely hard during the COVID-19 pandemic and these demands will not lessen in the coming few years.

With a higher demand on private healthcare providers due to long waiting lists in the NHS and more people being unwell due to long COVID, poorly managed chronic conditions and mental health difficulties, we have been thinking of ways to better protect the team’s wellbeing.

We have expanded our team to allow for a 4-day week that does not impact patient care and are excited to monitor the outcomes on job satisfaction, work-life balance, and physical and mental health.

We cannot as an employer say that we aim to promote good mental and physical health while giving our team no time to do what they need to support those efforts.”

The pilot will run for three months and outcomes reviewed, including any impact on patient care.

Following, the scheme will become permanent.
