Popular newspaper columnist, Rick Malwitz, has released his first book, based on his granddaughter’s harrowing medical battle, at only 8 years old. In “Little Girl, Get Up: After suffering a spinal cord stroke Leah was lifted by her family, her church, the local community and the medical community,” Malwitz shares how the communities around her helped her make a triumphant recovery.
On March 5th, 2018, Rick Malwitz received a call that no parent or grandparent ever wants to receive: his granddaughter, Leah, was seriously ill and doctors could not figure out why. Within eighteen hours of her hospitalization, she was profoundly quadriplegic and unable to breathe on her own. It took doctors ten days to diagnose that Leah had suffered from a spinal cord stroke.
“Leah was a perfectly healthy, athletic kid,” Malwitz said. “Her illness took us completely by surprise. If she hadn’t been in the ER at the exact moment that she stopped breathing, she wouldn’t be with us today.”
Malwitz, his family, and their communities turned to their faith and prayed earnestly for her recovery, and for a miracle. They thank God and Leah’s heroic caregivers for her recovery to be a vibrant teenager.
“When I was 8, I did not understand,” Leah said shortly after her 13th birthday. “Looking back, God had a plan. He was with me. Everything worked out better than I could have imagined.”
Through “Little Girl, Get Up,” a title drawn from a miracle performed by Jesus that can be found in the chapter of Mark 5 in the Bible, Malwitz wants to share not only Leah’s inspiring story, but the grace of God and his miracles and how suffering can strengthen one’s faith.
