International Medical Relief (IMR), a non-governmental organization based in Denver, Colorado, has dispatched a team of medical volunteers to Turkey to provide medical care, equipment, medicines and education for survivors of the Turkey-Syria Earthquake.
“We reached out to our long-term partners in Turkey who were working on a clinical outreach program to underserved communities and had shifted their efforts to focus on the earthquake victims,” said Shauna King, president of IMR. “We have experience working in these types of crisis situations, and they immediately accepted our offer for assistance.”
IMR has a Colorado-based Disaster Area Response Team (DART) of doctors, nurses, and EMTs in the field at ground zero working on the logistics to accept the first volunteer team, which leaves for Turkey today. The DART also delivered medicine and medical supplies for basic first aid, trauma care, and wound care, which are in short supply.
IMR has been working on the front lines of the Ukrainian refugee crisis for nearly a year organizing upwards of 700 medical professionals and nonmedical staff to serve more than 365,000 refugees in shelters in Poland. The recovery and regenerative healthcare efforts are still operating in those shelters, but IMR was able to expand relief efforts to allow for a Turkey-Syria response as well.
Founded in 2002, IMR has responded to catastrophic disasters around the world. The organization’s preparedness operations have served 84 countries, many of which are vulnerable to disasters.
International Medical Relief is actively recruiting volunteers to serve weeklong assignments and is collecting donations. Information is available on the organization’s website, internationalmedicalrelief.org.
