Improved Pharma has expanded their offerings by acquiring S. I. Photonics’ top-of-the-line spectrophotometer, model 440. This model has a high sensitivity, low noise CCD detector that enables the collection of a full spectrum within a second. The power of this instrument is enhanced by the number of accessories and dip probes that permit easy sampling of a variety of materials. The dip probes can be used to monitor reactions in real-time and are especially useful for obtaining quick data during dissolution experiments by placing the probe directly into the dissolution vessel. Dip probes of various path lengths (1 cm, 0.5 cm, and 0.2 cm) allow for the successful analysis of a wide range of solvents and concentrations. A standard cuvette holder can also be used. In addition to UV-Vis detection, HPLC is also available.
The UV-Vis spectrophotometer with the dip probe accessory was used with Improved Pharma’s Vankel dissolution system to monitor in real-time the difference in dissolution profiles for various preparations of an opioid tablet. This project investigated the abuse-deterrent performance of the formulation. As shown in the figure, this investigational formulation was easily “broken” and therefore was not abuse-deterrent.
Improved Pharma has also recently added intrinsic dissolution capabilities via the Wood’s apparatus, enabling analyses according to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) chapter 1087. Improved Pharma can also conduct dissolution and drug release testing using Apparatus 1 (baskets) and Apparatus 2 (paddles), following USP guidances. Depending on the experimental needs, various aqueous media including aqueous buffers and simulated biorelevant media (gastric and intestinal) can also be used.
In addition to dissolution studies, Improved Pharma can also conduct solubility studies. The solubility of drugs in various solvents, especially water, is a critical physical property that affects their stability, bioavailability, and therapeutic activity in various drug products.
