According to primary presenter, Heidi Andersen, MS, LPC, CEDS-S, RYT, “Relationships with food and the human body will transform on a deep level only when underlying issues related to beauty, embodiment and image are addressed.”

Beauty as a social justice issue is an invitation to challenge internalized self-objectification. Embodiment is learning to inhabit oneself from the inside out rather than reflecting on it. Developing an understanding of the nervous system leads to a kinder relationship with the human body. Image supports an individual in challenging inaccurate mirroring and allows for clarity. In a presentation scheduled for opening day at the 2020 iaedp™ Symposium, these elements of healing in the recovery process and how they relate to eating disorder behaviors will be explored, as well as the neurobiology of shame and learning how to heal shame related to beauty, embodiment and image that perpetuates disordered behaviors.
Slated for March 26 – 29 at the Omni at ChampionsGate in Orlando, the 2020 iaedp™ Symposium will offer the presentation, Beauty, Embodiment and Image as Healing Agents in Eating Disorder Recovery, and more than 100 other presentations and networking events to the more than 1,000 eating disorder treatment professionals expected to attend. According to primary presenter, Heidi Andersen, MS, LPC, CEDS-S, RYT, relationships with food and the human body will transform on a deep level only when underlying issues related to beauty, embodiment and image are addressed. Beauty is a social justice issue that expands the definition of worth from the current cultural definition to one that embraces a more soulful definition and challenges internalized self-objectification, prejudice and oppression. Embodiment is a process of learning to inhabit oneself from the inside out rather than from reflecting on it from the outside. Developing an understanding of the nervous system and building interceptive skills provides an individual the tools to develop a more capable relationship with the body and oneself.
Presenter Heidi Andersen, MS, LPC, CEDS-S, RYT is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Embodiment Specialist.
