HIGHLANDER, the world’s first and largest global long-distance hiking event series, has announced its expansion into the U.S. with the launch of HIGHLANDER Big Bear Lake. From September 27 to October 2, 2022, Big Bear Lake, the jewel of the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California, will serve as the inaugural U.S. location for the internationally acclaimed event series, making the life-changing HIGHLANDER experience accessible to more adventurers, further establishing the group as the premier global hiking club.
Founded in Croatia in 2017 when three friends decided to share their love and passion for long-distance hiking, HIGHLANDER has since grown to become the largest hiking club in the world, hosting more than 100 events in over 20 different countries across the globe. With a mission to help improve the lives of others through the benefits of long-distance hiking, HIGHLANDER provides the optimal environment for true self-reflection. Connecting with nature and conquering the physical and mental obstacles of a trail leaves participants with a feeling of accomplishment, enlightenment, and a new outlook on life.
“This is a milestone moment for us, and we’re thrilled that HIGHLANDER is finally being introduced in the U.S. as we further our ultimate goal of motivating people to enhance their mental and physical health through hiking adventures and unique experiences,” said HIGHLANDER CEO Jurica Barac. “We are confident that this HIGHLANDER experience, which explores one of the most unique destinations in the U.S., will help participants push beyond their limits and conquer self-doubt, giving them a newfound sense of gratitude for nature that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.”
Big Bear Lake, the once sought-after destination during the California Gold Rush, will now become a gold mine for hikers that are ready to test their physical and mental limits while living in perfect harmony with nature over a journey of several days. HIGHLANDER is designed to unite people through a common journey where even perfect strangers cheer each other on, often resulting in lifelong friendships. From advanced seasoned hikers to novice young adventurers, the inaugural event appeals to all walks of life offering three different formats including a 60-mile five-day journey, a 30-mile three-day journey, and a 15-mile weekend adventure.
Continuing its expansion across the globe, HIGHLANDER has upcoming events this year in Croatia, the United Kingdom, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Serbia, Slovenia, Greece, Montenegro, the United Arab Emirates, and now, the United States, in addition to scheduled events in Italy, Spain, Portugal, South Africa, Patagonia, Germany, Switzerland, France and Austria in 2023.
Dedicated to its long-time philosophy, “take only pictures, leave only footprints,” HIGHLANDER ensures that sustainability is at the forefront of all events by providing education for its participants on how to effectively preserve nature and safekeep it for future generations.
In 2021, Spartan, the world’s leading endurance sports and extreme wellness brand, recognized HIGHLANDER’s potential as a strategic partner, paving the way to bring this unique, long-distance adventure-hiking event to the U.S. The vision, mission and values shared by these two brands come from the same core: building mental and physical toughness to bring about positive lifestyle changes, with the common goal to improve 100 million lives globally.
