Healthier Generation Surveys Find Families Seek to Strengthen Social-Emotional Health, Physical Activity and Healthy Eating Habits

“’Kohl’s Feeling Healthy at Home resources ensure that no matter what form learning takes this year – families have supports in place to strengthen social-emotional health and learning.” – Kathy Higgins, CEO, Alliance for a Healthier Generation

In recent surveys conducted by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (Healthier Generation) regarding healthy habits at home, 81% of respondents noted a desire for more resources to improve their child’s social/emotional/mental well-being. Furthermore, a top priority for families was creating a home environment that supports physical activity, healthy eating and overall safety. In response to this community feedback, Healthier Generation and Kohl’s today released a collection of resources, “Kohl’s Feeling Healthy at Home,” to support the unique challenges faced by students and families this school year including prolonged anxiety, stress and isolation.

Caretakers and school staff are navigating a back-to-school season that looks and feels very different this year. Prioritizing social-emotional skills amongst children’s comprehensive health needs is crucial to strengthening their ability to learn, manage stress and anxiety, form strong relationships and rise above adversity. “Kohl’s Feeling Healthy at Home” provides families with research-backed resources to build social-emotional skills through communication, collaboration, self-reflection and daily self-care in service of successful academic outcomes.

“During a time of unprecedented uncertainty, we want to help kids and families build confidence in their health and academic success,” said Kathy Higgins, chief executive officer at Healthier Generation. “’Kohl’s Feeling Healthy at Home’ resources ensure that no matter what form learning takes this year – families have supports in place to strengthen social-emotional health and learning.”

“Kohl’s Feeling Healthy at Home” is part of the “Kohl’s Healthy at Home” family wellness initiative that encourages families to prioritize a healthy lifestyle in their homes and wherever their children live, learn and play. As part of this initiative, families have access to the “Healthy at Home Back to School Toolkit” that provides integrated resources for family well-being – from meal ideas to self-care tips for parents. Materials are available at no cost throughout the year and are frequently updated to support family nutrition, physical activity and social-emotional needs.
