Healthcare Workers Deprived of Restful Sleep, New Survey Data from AWAKE Chocolate Reveals

When asked if the healthcare industry prioritizes rest, almost 60% of respondents said, “No.”

As a shock to absolutely no one, the sleep-related challenges faced by healthcare workers, particularly nurses, are extensive. AWAKE Chocolate, the first-ever caffeinated chocolate and a delicious alternative to coffee and energy drinks, recently surveyed 1,000 American healthcare workers’ sleep habits to determine just how rested the industry really is (hint: it’s not). To honor those at the forefront of patient care for National Nurses Month, AWAKE is offering a wake-up call and free caffeinated chocolate to any healthcare worker for the month of May.

“While these survey results were not surprising, they still shed light on the fact that the health and wellbeing of nurses and healthcare workers needs to be better prioritized,” said Adam Deremo, CEO and co-founder of AWAKE Chocolate. “Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system and their health is critical to the care they provide to patients, which is why AWAKE is happy to contribute what we can to this industry.”

The American Association of Nurses states that nursing is the nation’s largest healthcare profession, with nearly 4.2 million registered nurses (RNs) nationwide. Nurses comprise the largest component of the healthcare workforce, are the primary providers of hospital patient care and deliver most of the nation’s long-term care. And according to AWAKE’s new survey data, these key individuals are also feeling unrested and sleep deprived.

Some of AWAKE’s most poignant findings include:

  • Nearly 82% of healthcare workers do not get the recommended amount of eight or more hours of sleep, and almost 60% of them do not feel rested throughout the day
  • Over 80% of healthcare workers report that they rely on coffee, energy drinks or other booster to get through their shifts
  • Nearly 60% of survey participants report feeling sleep deprived during the day

In addition to these, when asked if the healthcare industry prioritizes rest, almost 60% of respondents said, “No,” and over 40% of respondents said they feel more sleep deprived than people in their life who do not work in healthcare.

While this survey data reveals a strong need for more rest across the healthcare industry, change like this isn’t going to happen overnight and AWAKE is here for these frontline workers in the meantime. In addition to giving away free chocolate to any healthcare worker during the month of May (see terms linked above), AWAKE Chocolate is also offering all hospitals, doctor’s offices and other healthcare practices free AWAKE Bites.
