“In essence, CDI professionals help physicians translate their clinical language into the highly specified documentation required for healthcare coding by querying physicians when information is incomplete, contradictory, or unclear.”

The Association of Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialists (ACDIS) presents CDI Week September 12–16, 2022. This annual week of recognition celebrates the clinical documentation integrity (CDI) profession and provides broader education on the importance of proper documentation of medical care in the United States. The theme for this year is “Under the Sea-DI.” CDI professionals work hard every day for the benefit of their organizations and the patients they serve, but often, most of those efforts remain under the surface, invisible to the broader world.
CDI professionals work as intermediaries between physicians and coders, typically in the inpatient acute care setting. Over the past decade, there has been an increased expansion of and need for their services in a wide range of settings for many documentation improvement focus areas.
“In essence, CDI professionals help physicians translate their clinical language into the highly specified documentation required for healthcare coding by querying physicians when information is incomplete, contradictory, or unclear,” says Laurie Prescott, director of CDI education at HCPro and interim director of ACDIS. “During CDI Week, healthcare organizations across the country recognize and celebrate the value of CDI programs and the distinct skills and expertise of CDI specialists.”
In conjunction with CDI Week, ACDIS conducted its 12th annual CDI Industry Survey. The annual CDI survey examines topics such as physician engagement, outpatient CDI and risk adjustment, productivity, denial trends and CDI involvement, and staff engagement in the remote setting. With the support of CDI Week partners 3M Health Information Systems, Nuance, and AMN, ACDIS will conduct daily interviews with industry experts and post the interviews on the association’s website.
