A patent for “Plant Product Infused with Oil and Method of Infusion,” covering the infusion sector of the cannabis and hemp industries, was issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office on December 29, 2020, to inventor Michael Brunson. (United States Patent No. 10,874,703.) The process he invented infuses cannabis oil into plant product. The invention controls THC or CBD oil content in the plant product to a consistent and regulated dosage.
Brunson’s invention can be used to process dried plant product, such as cannabis or hemp, by infusing the plant product with THC or CBD oil. Certain cannabis products are made by the process of infusing oil into the dried cannabis plant. By regulating the amount of oil content in the cannabis or hemp product, the cannabinoid levels in the plant matter can be controlled from zero to 90%. Infusion of oil increases potency making the cannabis plant product up to three times stronger.
The invention also allows dosage control. Medicinal applications allow cannabis and hemp to be administered by a medical provider in prescribed doses. The user can provide informed consent regarding dosage amounts. Resulting products have a consistent and regulated amount of THC and/or CBD, and in particular, a higher dosage of CBD than is available in the natural plant product.
A growing number of medicinal and recreational cannabis businesses are using infusion to make cannabis products commonly known as “moon rocks” (which are infused cannabis buds rolled in kief). Cannabis products, such as moon rocks, infused prerolls and infused blunts, are covered by Brunson’s patent if they use his infusion process.
Cannabis and hemp businesses interested in securing a patent license agreement in their territory are encouraged to contact Michael Brunson’s legal counsel, Arthur D. Hodge, located in Carlsbad, California.
