Grand Opening of New University of Massachusetts Lowell State-of-the-art, Pilot-scale Lyophilization Facility

SP Scientific was delighted to support today the ribbon-cutting event officially launching the new UMass Lowell state-of-the-art, pilot-scale lyophilization facility. As the newest member of UMass Lowell’s Core Research Facilities, this non-GMP Lyophilization Lab (LyoBay) provides an R&D test bed for process development, scale-up and the development and application of new process analytical technologies. It will also serve as a user facility for pre-clinical process development and training to support the local and national biotechnology industry.

This facility includes a new SP Scientific S20 LyoConstellation production freeze dryer. LyoConstellation is a Line of Sight™-enabled freeze-drying system with very powerful refrigeration, delivering an expanded equipment capability and a large process space. This allows the development of highly aggressive cycles and the mapping of the furthest reaches of theoretical design space for a formulation. When handling high-value active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), and with a need to bring product to market as quickly and safely as possible, LyoConstellation addresses early stage development under aseptic and controlled conditions. This means product behaves in the same manner once it is ready for scale-up and eventually ready for commercialization.

This new pilot-scale lyophilization facility, an important addition to the UMass Lowell innovation ecosystem, was developed with generous support from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center and from the National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL). A NIIMBL funded project team led by Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) of Andover, MA, and including UMass Lowell, the University of Connecticut, Purdue University, Merck, and Genentech, are guiding the facility development and will be the inaugural users of the facility developing process scale-up tools to support improved biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

As well as the grand ribbon-cutting opening, the celebration included a list of invited guest speakers including representatives from PSI Inc., Pfizer, NIIMBL, Mass Life Sciences Center, UMass Lowell, as well as local and state government officials. The event included a tour of the new facility and an opportunity to visit some of the other R&D labs available in UMass Lowell’s Core Research Facilities.
