Carol Elia, Jerry Gorski, Maria Santangelo, Jim Brexler, and Amber Bahr celebrate the opening of the Community Center on October 2 in Doylestown, Pa.

“Work over the last decade at Pine Run is transformational, encompassing renovations to resident cottages, construction of a four-story apartment complex, upgrades of the 90-bed Pine Run Health Center, and improvements to infrastructure,”said Maria Santangelo, executive director at Pine Run.

Pine Run Villagers and Doylestown Health and Pine Run leaders celebrated the grand opening of Pine Run’s new community center devoted to healthy living on Oct. 2. Amenities in the 37,000-square-foot building include indoor and outdoor dining venues, entertainment galleries, a swimming pool and fitness facilities.

The two-story building was constructed in two phases after a groundbreaking in Spring 2017. The new center will continue to be the heart of the Pine Run community for years to come.

“While this may be the end of construction, we are poised on the precipice of a new chapter in senior living,” said Maria Santangelo, executive director at Pine Run. “In fact, work over the last decade at Pine Run is transformational, encompassing renovations to resident cottages, construction of a four-story apartment complex, upgrades of the 90-bed Pine Run Health Center, and improvements to infrastructure.”

The new center features versatile spaces known as “galleries” for food, fitness and fun activities. The first phase of construction included three indoor and two outdoor dining galleries overlooking the pond, as well as a café. The second phase includes an expanded fitness center with new equipment, space for classes, an indoor pool with a private changing area, and a 175-seat auditorium.

“Pine Run is an integral part of Doylestown Health, now and far into the future,” said Jim Brexler, President and CEO. “Doylestown Health has a bright future – a visionary future – and Pine Run is an important part of the continuum of care we offer our community, today and always.”

Construction of the new Community Center is one of the priorities of ONE VISION: The Campaign for Doylestown Health, a $75 million philanthropic effort that includes Pine Run and the Doylestown Hospital campus. The campaign launched last year and has received nearly $60 million in gifts, pledges and bequests.

Two other new Doylestown Health construction projects are nearing completion: The Cardiovascular and Critical Care Pavilion, housing the Woodall Center for Heart and Vascular Care, which will open in early 2020. The Ambulatory Center on the health system’s flagship hospital campus, with its same-day surgery center, orthopedic offices and rehabilitation facilities, will be finished in Spring 2020.

The ONE VISION campaign launched publicly in June 2018 and will end in 2023 to mark the centennial of Doylestown Hospital, founded by the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown.

“Nearly 125 years ago at its founding, I suspect the women of the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown would never have imaged how their vision to create a healthier community would one day result in a time and place like this,” said Joyce Hanson, president of the VIA. “This community center is the embodiment of that vision – it offers healthy options in food and activities, but most of all, it helps to build a better community.”

Located on 43 acres in Doylestown Township, Pine Run was originally built in 1976. The Ferry Road campus is home to more than 300 seniors who enjoy independent living in cottages and apartments. Also located on the campus are the Pine Run Health Center, which offers rehabilitation services and 90 skilled nursing beds.

Pine Run continues to grow and re-invest in Villager services and facilities. The $13 million Community Center is part of a decade-long investment in Pine Run.

The New Community Center also features a library and computer nook, living room with fireplace, a hair and nail salon and a Country Store.

Designed by AG Architecture Inc. and built by Gorski Engineering of Collegeville, the center uses environmentally-friendly green materials and innovative features to reduce energy costs. The site incorporates a rain garden with plantings, a greenhouse, and a pond with new landscaping enjoyable in all four seasons.
