With more than 400 centers spanning 45 states, FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers is the fastest-growing physical therapy franchise in the United States. Through a holistic, whole-body approach, FYZICAL not only helps clients to recover from injuries and surgeries, but also takes rehabilitation a step further to help clients achieve optimal wellness and regain their love of life while gaining new skills. As the world continues to recover from the pandemic, FYZICAL’s innovative approach to health and wellness has the potential to combat a wide variety of long-term issues caused by COVID-19.
This summer, FYZICAL began rolling out its Pulmonary Program to provide proactive care to patients that have been affected by COVID-19 throughout the U.S. The Pulmonary Program includes offering a pulmonary care guide with resources about overall treatment protocols, help with evaluations and innovative tools. Moving forward, this innovative care will continue to provide essential assistance to patients in a post-COVID world.
Herb Silver, a Marietta, Georgia-based FYZICAL franchisee who is a part of the COVID-19 task force rolling out the Pulmonary Program, points out that they’ve become aware that pulmonary care can help treat a variety of issues beyond COVID-19, including chronic pain, concussion syndrome, anxiety and more. He knows first-hand because his son is currently recovering from the disease.
“Once you’ve had the virus, you don’t just get better and move on — there can be long-standing complications that can require physical therapy,” said CEO Brian Belmont. “How long it takes to recover and the level of reconditioning and rehab that will be required can vary based on the level of hospitalization and severity.”
Throughout stay-at-home orders, Americans have been in isolation without a continuation of regular therapy, putting them at a much higher risk of falling and deconditioning. In addition, FYZICAL recognizes that fall prevention is more important than ever. As the world contends with the long-term effects of COVID-19 on physical and emotional health, Americans can learn by example from other countries that have also been impacted by the pandemic. For instance, in Australia in June, approximately two months after their “first wave” had passed, the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA), reported that falls due to COVID-19 physical inactivity and isolation were up 30%.
The APA notes that, “While well-meaning, infection control measures taken by aged care providers have had the perverse effect of accelerating physical, mental and emotional decline in many cases … The lack of activity and exercise will have significantly impacted … their mobility, strength and balance and their cognitive and mental health.”
The cost of falls in the U.S. in 2020 was expected to reach $68 billion — if a similar 30% increase in falls occurs in the U.S. as a result of being sedentary during COVID, it is possible that the U.S. could spend $88 billion on falls this year. With the U.S. economy already strained, and many Americans devastated both physically and mentally from COVID-19, fall prevention and vestibular therapy are more important than ever this year.
Each FYZICAL center offers a wide variety of services and is equipped to address a range of diagnoses and concerns, including dizziness, balance and neurologic issues and pelvic health. With its balance program, franchisees are able to provide NASA-developed technology that helps patients achieve maximal well-being, all while providing a profitable business model that positions FYZICAL as the most recognizable, go-to authority on the treatment of vestibular issues.
Looking ahead, Belmont notes that physical therapy can help patients be happier and ultimately lead a better life. While some doctors have said that patients may have to live with the pain, physical therapists have stepped in and helped people feel better and stronger much faster through preconditioning protocols and vestibular care.
“As patients across the country recover from this unprecedented pandemic, FYZICAL continues to innovate in order to help clients achieve optimal wellness and get back to living their best life,” said Belmont.
