Fruit Street Health Surpasses 44,000 Participants Enrolled Into Its CDC-Recognized Diabetes Prevention Program

With Fruit Street having enrolled more than 44,000 participants, we are proud to estimate that Fruit Street has enrolled approximately 7% of all individuals that have ever participated in an in-person or digital diabetes prevention program based on CDC reported data.

Fruit Street Health, a CDC-recognized distance learning provider of the National Diabetes Prevention Program, today announced surpassing more than 44,000 participants enrolled into its diabetes prevention program since launching its program in late 2017. More than 10,000 of these participants enrolled in 2022.

Fruit Street’s diabetes prevention program is a twelve month program designed to help people with prediabetes reduce their risk for Type 2 diabetes by losing 5-7% of their weight through diet and lifestyle changes. The program consists of 26 one-hour long classes between a dietitian and a group of 30 other participants delivered via Zoom. During each class, curriculum topics such as diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management are discussed. Participants are also provided a wireless scale and Fitbit so they can track their weight loss progress and physical activity in the Fruit Street mobile app. The Fruit Street mobile app also enables participants to take photos of their meals and receive personalized feedback from their dietitian.

Fruit Street addresses the constraints of physical class attendance by enabling participants to attend class via telehealth on Zoom. This online participation eliminates both cost and travel time of commuting to a physical classroom.

The National Diabetes Prevention Program that Fruit Street delivers is based on previous clinical research funded by Medicare and published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2002. This research found that participants in diabetes prevention programs can reduce their risk for developing Type 2 diabetes by 58% and by 71% for individuals over the age of 60. Fruit Street has received Full Recognition from the CDC which validates its high quality clinical outcomes.

Fruit Street currently enrolls participants into its diabetes prevention program by offering its services to self-insured employers and commercial health plans. In 2023, the company plans to expand its enrollment strategy by marketing directly to consumers, partnering with physicians to enroll their patients, and enrolling state Medicaid populations.

As of March 2022, the CDC recognized 2,147 organizations to deliver the lifestyle change program in all 50 states. Since February 2012, more than 600,000 people at high risk of type 2 diabetes have participated in the National Diabetes Prevention Program.

The CEO & Founder of Fruit Street Laurence Girard stated:

“With Fruit Street surpassing 44,000 enrollments, we are proud that Fruit Street has enrolled approximately 7% of all individuals that have ever participated in a diabetes prevention program, based on CDC reported data. Fruit Street has clearly demonstrated that it is one of the largest CDC-recognized diabetes prevention programs in the United States.”

Fruit Street’s founder, Laurence Girard, was recently invited to the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health where he spoke with national public health leaders including New Jersey Senator Corey Booker on how to address the epidemic of diet-related diseases in the United States.

“The White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health was inspiring for our team and motivated us to set a goal of enrolling hundreds of thousands or millions of participants into our CDC-recognized diabetes prevention program. It is clear from the White House conference that addressing diet-related diseases such as Type 2 diabetes has become a top priority. As a social impact venture, we look forward to continuing to collaborate with both government and the private sector on these public health goals.”
