LOS ANGELES (PRWEB)
October 15, 2020
This year has been unprecedented due to the pandemic impacting the world and events hitting close to home such as the untimely death of actor Chadwick Boseman who succumbed to cancer on August 28. The impact of 2020 has been felt emotionally but has also had a ripple effect on cancer patients in need of access to crucial services. Pandemic-related challenges have resulted in plasma and monetary donations falling significantly lower than they were a year ago. The Tackles4Cancer organization is hosting a Halloween Day virtual 10k to both honor Boseman and raise funds to improve outcomes for cancer survivors as October also marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Tackles4Cancer will host its 5th annual Super Hero run on October 31, with this year’s event entirely virtual due to the pandemic and to be able to reach a broader base of those impacted by the cause. The event will pay tribute to the life and legacy of Boseman, who made history as the first black actor to headline a Marvel Cinematic Universe film as the comic book superhero T’Challa. In 2016, Boseman was diagnosed with colon cancer but kept his condition private, continuing to act while receiving treatment. The theme for the run is “Peace King” with participants encouraged to show support for Boseman’s meaningful legacy by wearing Black Panther themed costumes.
Tackles4Cancer was founded by Austin after facing the challenges of his own diagnosis of stage III Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2014. His mission is for the organization to promote cancer awareness and help those in need of financial and emotional assistance while fighting cancer.
“The silent struggle that Chadwick and so many others face is heart wrenching, so we teamed up with an amazing group of athletes and philanthropists to promote positivity,” Austin said. “This event was organized to give voice to those who lost their fight as well as to those who continue to struggle. The super hero effect will enable us to tackle multiple issues that impact our community including cancer, COVID-19, health and wellness, and social issues.”
The event will feature an opening prayer by Natasha N. Mackey Global Ministries; a virtual running experience, including a 30 minute mind and body session, led by two-time Super Bowl champion Tyrone Poole; and stretching by Shak Fitness. With the country still in various stages of quarantine, event organizers partnered with Strava, an app for runners to track progress and hold one another accountable via activity updates, and Umbali, a fundraising platform that teams up with athletes giving back to the community.
In support of Peace King, the event has also partnered with community artists, including Tyler Gordon and Michael Hugue whose work of celebrities and influential leaders is featured in The Black Voices Art Series, an open canvas for creative black artists in the Miami area. When you purchase a poster or print of Chadwick Boseman, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Tackles4Cancer.
