Fascia adds extra padding to help conceal bumps or minor imperfections on the nose. At the same time, fascia can help give the nose a nice, smooth look.

Dr. Babak Azizzadeh, a globally recognized facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon and Chairman and Director of the CENTER for Advanced Facial Plastic Surgery in Los Angeles, is sharing his unique perspective on fascia and its impact on the outcomes of rhinoplasty surgery.
Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular facial plastic surgeries, and it is used to reshape or resize the nose or treat functional defects of the nose. Yet, much in the same way that no two people have the same nose, there is no standard approach to rhinoplasty surgery.
Fascia refers to connective tissue that holds nerve fibers in place. When used during rhinoplasty surgery, fascia adds padding to smooth the appearance of the nose.
Many physicians underestimate the value of fascia in rhinoplasty procedures, according to Dr. Azizzadeh. However, Dr. Azizzadeh frequently uses fascia during nose surgery, particularly when he works with older patients or patients with thin skin on the nose. He believes fascia can play a key role in helping nose surgery patients achieve a balanced, natural-looking facial appearance.
If Dr. Azizzadeh reconstructs a rhinoplasty patient’s nose, he may have to add a bone graft to help his patient achieve their desired results. But, in older patients or patients with thin skin on the nose, Dr. Azizzadeh places fascia over a bone graft during rhinoplasty surgery. In doing so, Dr. Azizzadeh can hide his patient’s bone graft and ensure that their nose complements their eyes, cheeks, and other facial features.
“The benefits of using fascia during rhinoplasty surgery can be significant,” Dr. Azizzadeh says. “Fascia adds extra padding to help conceal bumps or minor imperfections on the nose. At the same time, fascia can help give the nose a nice, smooth look.”
For patients who are considering rhinoplasty surgery, Dr. Azizzadeh conducts a full evaluation prior to treatment. If a patient qualifies for rhinoplasty surgery, Dr. Azizzadeh crafts a custom treatment plan that may require the use of fascia.
