Dr. Lulua Bahrainwala, a member of the first graduating class of Emanate Health’s Family Medicine Residency Program, has been named “Resident of the Year” by the California Academy of Family Physicians Foundation.
“Dr. Bahrainwala is a well-rounded and stellar resident with a strong service ethic,” said Dr. Maili Velez-Dalla Tor, M.D., FAAFP, Director, Emanate Health Family Medicine Residency Program. “Clinically, she is well-versed on formulating proper treatment plans and is able to work well with multidisciplinary teams in various settings. Faculty has noted that Dr. Bahrainwala’s commitment and intrinsic motivation to learn always makes it a pleasure to supervise her.”
Dr. Bahrainwala, selected the Academic Chief Resident by faculty for her demonstrated leadership skills and academic standing, recently graduated from the residency program and will soon begin a Community Medicine Fellowship at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Fontana.
The CAFP Foundation “Resident of the Year Award” represents the finest characteristics of family medicine, including a commitment to leadership, communication, mentorship and advocacy, said Marianne McKennett, MD, President, CAFP Foundation.
“Beyond her academic success, Lulua is an engaged learner whose extraordinary compassion, intelligence, motivation and willingness to help others truly sets her apart. She is well-deserving of this award,” McKennett said.
From a young age in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Dr. Bahrainwala said her parents taught her the value of serving other people, which was her “north star.” Her service activities included volunteering at medical camps, blood collection drives and food drives. Growing up with her grandparents, Dr. Bahrainwala also administered their insulin injections and witnessed how chronic diseases impacted them—which influenced her decision to pursue medicine.
“An award like this is never won in a vacuum and I have Emanate Health and CAFP Foundation to thank for giving me the opportunity to showcase my leadership skills, hone my advocacy interests and work toward the betterment of our community,” Dr. Bahrainwala said. “It also allowed me to set an example to my son that a working mother in a medical residency program can have it all, and accept nothing less.”
Dr. Bahrainwala holds a Master of Sciences in Global Health from the University of California, San Francisco. She completed medical school at MVP Samajs’ Dr. Vasantrao Pawar Medical College Hospital and Research Center in India with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees. A U.S citizen, Dr. Bahrainwala is fluent in English, Hindi and Gujrati (a language native to the Indian state of Gujarat), and possesses intermediate fluency in Spanish and French.
The Emanate Health Family Medicine Residency Program is an innovative residency program that encourages residents to learn, collaborate and change the way we look at family medicine. The program is affiliated with the Keck School of Medicine of USC and its Department of Family Medicine. We believe that our residents are the future—a generation of physicians possessing great courage, work ethic and joy at the prospect of transforming rather than adapting to the current world of medicine.
