Duval County School Buzzes with Excitement for Upcoming Mosquito Education Day

Mosquito Control educators will be visiting Mayport Coastal Sciences Elementary School to offer students an unforgettable experience on Wednesday, March 2nd, 2022. Professionals from the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) will provide presentations and hands on activities for students and staff as part of a mosquito education program conducted yearly during the week of the Annual American Mosquito Control Association Meeting.

AMCA volunteers will share their knowledge and professional experiences with students, supporting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education. They will provide individual classroom presentations investigating various mosquitoes found in the United States, Florida and throughout the world. Topics include mosquito biology, the life cycle, the vital role they play in our ecosystems and mosquito surveillance and control. There will also be an emphasis on what students can do to protect themselves from mosquito bites and diseases such as West Nile virus. Students will view living mosquito larvae-and aquatic organisms that help control nuisance mosquito populations.

Students will take with them a new appreciation for the public health significance of mosquitoes, as well as fun giveaways and activities sent to every classroom teacher participating in the program.
