On Wednesday, November 25, Dr. Thomas McCawley was appointed to the Florida Board of Dentistry. According to their website, The Florida Board of Dentistry was “established to ensure that every dentist and dental hygienist practicing in this state meets minimum requirements for safe practice.” Dr. McCawley has practiced in Fort Lauderdale for almost 40 years. A graduate of the University of Illinois College Of Dentistry, Dr. McCawley holds a specialty degree in Periodontics from Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry, and he is a Fellow of the prestigious American College of Dentists.
“I am honored to be appointed to serve on the Florida State Board of Dentistry,” says Dr. McCawley, “I wish to help protect the health and welfare of our citizens from dental treatments which do not meet the standard of care, and also to help elevate and maintain the professional standards of dentistry in Florida.” The Board consists of eleven members: Seven members must be licensed dentists actively engaged in clinical practice; two members must be actively practicing dental hygienists; and two members must be consumers employed in a field or occupation that is not related to the dental profession. The Board of Dentistry is responsible for licensure, monitoring and ensuring the safe practice of dentists and dental hygienists in their service to the people of Florida.
As stated on their website, “The Florida Board of Dentistry plays a leading role in the State’s ever-changing health care environment. This is accomplished through communications with the public, legislature, dental colleges, the dental community, and through taking active roles on national dental organizations.”

Dr. Tom McCawley practices periodontics with his son Dr. Mark McCawley in Fort Lauderdale. Previously, he served three years in the U.S. Army Dental Corps as Chief of Periodontics at the Baumholder, Germany Dental Center. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, a member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontics and Past President of the Florida Association of Periodontists. Dr. McCawley earned his bachelor’s degree and Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Illinois and his Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Periodontics from Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry.
