Dr. Matthew Nelson, Phoenix Magazine’s Top Dentist, is changing the patient experience paradigm with Oral Sedation Dentistry

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses carefully-controlled medication to help you feel relaxed and comfortable while undergoing a dental procedure. This allows you to receive the care you need without overwhelming stress.

While sedation won’t cure anxiety, some patients have found that over time, successful visits with sedation help them to feel less stressed about dental care overall.

Oral sedation is administered in pill form and is taken the night before as well as an hour before treatment. In addition, more is given while the treatment is being done. The medication is prescription strength and designed to help you mentally and physically relax.

For oral sedation, you will need to arrange transportation to and from your appointment.

Does Oral Sedation Put Me To Sleep?

Sedation dentistry is sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry” because you will feel like you fell asleep during your treatment. Under oral sedation, you are fully conscious and will respond to verbal requests and questions from the dentist. Even the most anxious and frightened patients are happy with the results of sedation dentistry.

How Will I Feel after sedation?

After sedation, you may feel groggy, sleepy, and relaxed. You will likely want to sleep the rest of the day and will be able to return to normal activities the next day. Many times, with the sedation medication, you don’t remember even having the dental work done!

Is Being Sedated During Dental Treatments Safe?

Sedation dentistry has an extensive record of being very safe and effective. It’s important to inform your dentist about any medical conditions or medications you are on during your consultation. Your physical health is a priority while under our care.
