General Bariatric Surgeon Dr. Mario Almanza knows how effective procedures like gastric sleeve, gastric bypass and lap band surgery can be for enabling successful, long-term weight loss and the healthier, slimmer body patients deserve.
But Dr. Almanza also knows how important a healthy recovery process is to surgical success and how critical the right post-op behaviors are to achieving good health and sustained weight loss long after the patient has healed.
Below, Dr. Mario Almanza offers his take on what each weight loss patient should do during those important days and months after surgery – and how adhering to the right recovery plan can empower faster healing and make coping with post-op challenges just a little bit easier.
1. Speak with your bariatric care team before going home:
Dr. Mario Almanza has performed thousands of weight-loss surgeries. And after each procedure, Dr. Almanza and his team have taken great care to supply each patient with the information they need to enjoy the safest recovery possible.
Once your surgery is over, be sure to consult with your bariatric physician about everything you’ll need to optimize healing and avoid potential side effects. Ask any/all questions you have about recovery, what you’ll need to eat (post-op diet) and what resources are out there to make the process smoother.
2. Adhere to your medication plan:
As Dr. Almanza knows, the level of discomfort and pain patients experience post-op is highly personalized, depending largely on such factors as the type of bariatric procedure performed, the individual patient’s level of pain tolerance and their unique state of health.
But regardless of the situation, Dr. Mario Almanza recommends sticking to the pain management plan prescribed by the physician, and speaking out if pain and discomfort persist in spite of the medication. Doing so allows your bariatric team to monitor your progress and prescribe solutions when things don’t appear to be working.
3. Prevent complications by following instructions:
Bariatric surgery is generally pretty safe. Still, it’s crucial to adhere to any/all post-op instructions your surgical team provides to minimize complications that can hinder a successful recovery.
Dr. Mario Almanza recommends following each post-op instruction to the letter throughout your recovery, no matter how banal or unnecessary any steps may seem.
4. Optimize your at-home recovery environment:
Once you leave the hospital or post-op ward, it’s important to have a comfortable at-home environment to return to and begin your recovery process.
Dr. Almanza and his team recommend arranging such an environment beforehand and ensuring you have the post-op foods, entertainment options and comfy bed/couch areas ready once you’re given the green light to go home.
5. Stay in touch with your physician:
As Dr. Mario Almanza knows, sticking to follow-up appointments and updating your physician on your progress are critical to achieving a successful recovery. Be sure to consult your doctor should you experience any abnormal post-op swelling, illness or side effects, and always ask questions when needed.
